Hello Nell,

Welcome to the board!!!

I am still in the pre-op process so I can't answer your questions but surely someone else will! You can also look around the board and read some of the previous posts: your answers will come from there as well! You will even find answers to questions you didn't know you had!!! That was my case anyways!!!

How much weight are you looking to lose? Tell us a little bit more about yourself...

Default Welcome!

Wow, you've asked some broad questions, too broad to answer here. Your doctor should be providing a lot of this info too; he/she should ALWAYS be your first resource, then come here to finesse and tweak your info. At your stage I would concentrate on reading the pre-op section, then the personal stories. You've got a lot of homework to do, but it is soooooo worth it to be well informed. I wish you luck! (And yes- I would definitely do it again!)

Thumbs up Hi Nell!

I am also just starting this WLS (weight loss surgery) journey. My appointment for the surgeon's office seminar is this Thursday morning for 3 hours. In order to even go to the seminar, I had to have my PCP (primary care physician) put in for an authorization from Healthnet HMO. It only took them two days to approve the referral. Since I made my decision to pursure surgery, I've been researching the types of procedures. At first I was sure I would go with the LapBand, but now as I read more, I'm not sure anymore. I am 5'7" and weigh 260 pounds so I have 120 pounds to lose and many people have advised me that the lap RNY would be a better option for me. Good Luck in your quest, and let us all know how the process is going! April in Sacramento

Welcome Nell! I just had my gastric bypass April 2 (and turned 54 the next day; so we're pretty close in age except your younger you lucky person you)!!!

I had been thinking about the surgery for about 3 years...went to my first seminar in September 07; did the six month STUPERVISED DIET (yes...that's spelled just right), and then went through the many tests you need to have before you get your surgery scheduled. Had the surgery and have, so far, not had any complications except that I'm still hungry! HA! That is a vile trick to play on me. Don't worry though...everyone has their own experience following surgery...many here were not the least bit hungry for months. I'm not trying to scare you off. But all in all it has been quite the experience.

I lurked around this forum for some time before joining and was totally blown away by the wonderful, educated and kind people here. Everyone was in a different stage of their journey. I also bought about 6 or 7 books about the surgery (your library may also have some on hand). If you would like a down to basics book to read I would recommend "Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies". It will take you through most of the process.

Otherwise, I would just keep reading peoples experiences in this forum and gather all the info you can before committing to the surgery. I am only 4 weeks out and can see what a total change my life has taken...you need a lot of discipline and plain old gumption to stick to the required "rules and regulations" to make your surgery successful.

Good luck to you dearie...mumsy

Nell, I'd advise you to search for, then check out the very comprehensive post by Gwen entitled "Welcome all the newbies to the TT community" but of course, your doctor should be your final authority on all GBS questions and concerns. Welcome.
