CONFUSED Newbie!!!
Hello all! My name is Nicole, and I am officially confused! I had my heart set on the Lap-Band. Then yesterday I went to my surgeon and he also discussed RNY. He didn't pressure me one way or another, but now I don't know which to choose. I know that nobody can make that decision for me, but I was wondering what made you choose what you chose? Also, if you chose the band or RNY, do you wish you chose something different?
Thanks for all feedback!

For me, there were three deciding factors: overall weight loss results, complications with band, and diet after surgery. My surgeon's statistics showed much greater success in patients who had gbs. Since I need to lose about 125 or more pounds, I needed the most drastic option, which was gbs. Secondly, there just seemed to be so many complications with the band. And all those fills? No thank you. My insurance would only pay for one fill. Finally, there was the diet required post surgery. Band patients can still choose to suck down milkshakes all day if they want to. I needed something to FORCE me to change my eating habits. With gbs, I am so good with my diet because I'm afraid of puking! I wouldn't be this good with band!

Thank you both for your response. Can anyone lead me in the direction of online statistics between AGB and RNY?

I chose the RNY because statistics show you lose more weight and keep it off longer. And ultimately that's my goal.
Also dealing with the 'port' on the band and getting fills just sounded like something I did NOT want to deal with.
I just didn't want to mess with the band knowing there was a more effective approach with RNY. But for me the decission was easy. Maybe you have less weight to lose? Or maybe don't want to permanently alter your insides?
I'm sure you'll know what's best for you after you get the facts.
I don't mean to say one is better than the other ... so no offense anyone!!

Of course no offense! You didn't write anything offensive. Plus, I want to know everything! The good, the bad, and the ugly!

4 days on liquid and I'm getting depressed!
Why am I feeling so down? Is it because I am on a liquid diet you think? My surgery is in 4 days so only 3 more days of liquids and then I start again. Is it tough for everyone.

At first I was all about the lap band .... lap band this and that. Than I really started to look into RNY, and had a huge eye openier.
Why I chose RNY
Lapband as far as I am concerned turns your stomach into a funnel. And all you have to do is drink while eatting and chew very well and you can eat just about anything you want. Me personally, I need restriction. They kind that you cant cheat. I dont really do sweet, I love my meats and veggies. I didnt want to have to spend the rest of my life going back to the Dr for fills, with the lapband you have to goto the Dr for fills and unfills inorder to hit your sweet spot. With the lapband you can drink Mcdonalds shakes all day, and not have any issues. With RNY you can drink that shake however most likey the sugar will make you so ill, you will never want to do that again. That is what I need.
Its a personal choice to make, I would goto at least 3 different free seminars and see how the Dr give there information and read this board and others like it, than make up your mind.
For me I started with Lapband and ending with RNY, and I am six weeks out and happy I made the decision I did.

I also looked into getting the lap band. I went to a seminar and learned all about it, except for the fact that you can cheat, cheat, cheat it. Also long as you drink while you are eating whatever you want that is fattening.....it will pass through the band and you will get every single calorie. This is what really made me look at having Lap RNY done. (I haven't had surgery yet, I'm waiting on insurance to approve me.) I'm a big sweet eater, and love carbs too. Heck, I just LOVE food!! I need to know that if I try to eat things that I shouldn't be eating, that my body will get rid of it for me (dumping or vomiting). Therefore, teaching me what I have done wrong. I need that consequence in my life, I need to learn how and what to eat.....to keep me from experiencing the dumping & vomiting.

I picked the Gastric Bypass. I knew me! I needed to have consiquences (sp?) to wrong actions. Now with the band the biggest consiquence is you won't lose weight or you might gain. Well, odviously when I put that cookie to my lips I don't care that it ends up on my butt!! I needed to have something more serious, like puking!! I CAN NOT STAND to puke!! So that was one of my factors in picking which procedure. Not sure if that helps you or not..
