Gastric by pass scheduled for friday!
Hi Everyone,
I wanted to actually introduce myself because I have been looking around here for months now and I am finally scheduled for surgery thsi friday,
April 18. I am starting to freak out! I do feel I am prepared- but still really nervous. So I am need ing some support.
I had to lose about 15 lbs before my surgen would schedule, which I did but now I am sure I have put on about 5 or more of those pounds!! I hope I will not fail at this too!!
He hasnt given me much guidance on what to do after, but I am a nursing student and have done lots of the research myself- but still feel like I dont know it all!
I will let you all know how everything went after and please pray that it will all be fine and that this will work for me and I can start living the rest of my life!!
Caran

Caran:
Congratulations on your upcoming surgery. You'll be fine. I was terrified, as I'm sure you are very nervous too. It's a normal reaction. There are so many things that will change and change is alway hard. Are you prepared for after surgery? Did you pick up and protien drinks and the like yet? One thing I know it's kind of silly, but I alway tell people don't forget the chapstick. My lips got so dry. Do you have children? Will they be coming to see you? Have you prepared them for what they will see when you come out of surgery? Between the tubes and IV I mean. I will be thinking of you Friday. Best of luck to you.
Sharon

Hi Caran:
My surgery is set for this Wednesday, two days before you and I've had to type Wednesday about three times and I too am "apprehensive" about the unknown, even though the great TT community and my LifeWeigh Bariatrics community and fantastic staff have been working with me for over six months now. I have always defined "fear" as a feeling that was directed toward a "known stress-inducer" while "anxiety" is what we feel when we don't know exactly what we are fearful of, but we know there's lots of scary things out there....So I guess I would have to say I am "anxious" about it all because everybody's experience is slightly different. I've read of a handful of folks who just fly thru it all with the greatest of ease, but for most, there are rough spots, at least for awhile. I think I am most afraid of dying of course. I got a will written, have paid all my bills up, and stuff....but because my doctor took me off hip meds (NSAIDS) a week ago, I am in such incredible pain for my hip, I fear not being able to get all the walking in post-surgically and then getting a pulmonary embolism...But then my calmer, rational mind says, I'll be on other pain meds, I will have people who KNOW my specific situation and my surgeon already has a known rep with the nurses as being a fierce advocate for what his patients need, so really ISN'T IT ALL IN GOD'S HANDS NOW? AND IF GOD'S LOVED ME THIS FAR IN MY LIFE (FIFTY SIX YEARS) WHY SHOULD GOD STOP LOVING ME NOW?! While far from perfect, I am worthy of God's love and YOU are worthy of God's love, so I think we both have the right to lose weight like this, change into healthier lifestyles and be great examples of courage and change for others. So am I anxious, you betcha. But am I ready, you betcha. And I hope the same goes for you.
(Oh yeah, did you guess that I'm a former chaplain in hospitals and a parish minister for over thirty years?)
Blessings, Caran! Let's keep in touch.

Congratulations on your surgery date. All will be well and you will be on the "loser's bench" along with Bill and all the other post-oper's here.
I wish I were there along side both you and Bill this week, but I guess my time will come.
God's blessings to you and to you Bill. I'll be thinking of you both.
Blessings,

Thank guys for the encouragement! I really needed that!
Sharon- I havent really prepared anything yet. I have a big exam on wednesday and then can focus on that stuff on wednesday afternoon. Anyother ideas in addition to protein shakes?? I do have kids 3 boys. 14, 12, and 8. I have sahred with the two older ones what kind of surgery I am having but not the youngest because he wont understand nor keep it to himself I have not however prepared them for what they will see when they come to visit me! GREAT IDEA!! Thank you.
Bill- I thank you so much for your kind words and I too beleive that I am in Gods hands and that I will be fine. I havent prepared a will though- I do want to do a power of attorney document up before friday. I am not anticipating dying- really- I know that is a possibility- but I have no comorbidities at this point and I am healthy- just OVERWEIGHT! God willing, I will make it through. I will be praying for you on wednesday Bill. God Bless!
Thank you Olga and Paul for your kind words and I know you will be saying a prayer for me on friday. I will keep you posted!

Caren,
Congrats on getting this far. You will make it over the fence just fine. I do have a suggestion for you on the protein that you will be taking. Since your pouch will be so small you might consider taking 42gram protein vials in the first 2 weeks. As I have heard and not experienced yet that it is much easier to get 3 oz of the protein vials down than a whole protein drink. You can find them at Vitamin world or online. They are a little pricey though, but if you buy them off ot this website I give you yo will only have to pay about $30.00 for a case of 12 vials, they usually run about $45.00. Here is the website: IDS New Whey Liquid Protein 42 g --Raspberry -12 Vials - Vitacost... You might even find them locally in health food stores since you are getting surgery so soon. I hope this is a help to you and I wish you the best and my prayers are with you.
Hugz,
Tina
