Was thinking Lapband but now going w/bypass
Hi all. Well, I'm glad that I found this website. I am from Placentia, CA. I went to my new patient meeting yesterday with the idea that I was going to do the Lapband procedure and not the bypass. Well, after yesterday, I am now headed for the bypass. I was fascinated that with the bypass that my diabetes could be reversed so quickly. I also have had one knee replacement and need another one done. If I can lose my excess weight I may not even need the other knee replaced yet. They do the bypass laproscopically too. My husband and I both agreed that the best way for me would be to do the bypass. Yes, I don't care for the mortality rate, but I am more afraid of failing on the lapband. I need something that will "stop" me from eating things that are not healthy. The lapband seemed like a device that you can manipulate alot easier than the bypass.
I know that this is a decision that everyone must make for themselves. I look forward to this journey and with your support and with the Lord's help, I'll get through this just fine.
Good luck everyone!
Olga

Welcome aboard Olga. I'm a bit biased, but I think you made the right choice with the RNY. And it's true, most people rid themselves of diabetes quickly with surgery, as well as most of the other co-morbidities. Good luck to you and keep us posted on your progress.

I did the same thing. For the first 3 months I was all about the lapband, until I realized that I did not think that it was right for me. I have to lose about 150 pounds, and I don't think I could have done it with the lapband. I am having the RNY in March!

My weigh-loss journey sounds alot like yours. I too was set to get the lap-band, had some concerns in the back of my mind that the band wouldn't work in the long run for me. And when I met with my doctor she said that if I had lap-band I'd still be on diabetes meds, but it I had the gastric-bypass I'd be free of diabetes medications. Prior to surgery my diabetes was VERY WELL controlled with medication, so she knew that I'd be diabetes-free post op.
Well left the hospital post op with NO MEDS and had a reading of 138...two-three weeks later my reading was 117 fasting. Feels great! I'm now almost 6 weeks post-op and according to my scales I'm down about 34 lbs, off my cholesterol, diabetes, halved my high-blood pressure...best thing I have ever done is this surgery!!
Good luck and as always keep us posted on your journey

I also thought I wanted the band, but after going to an information session I decided the bypass was right for me! I am glad you found something that you feel will be right for you! Best of luck in your journey.

Me too... started out full guns for the Lap Band... then I figured out that it would not be "stern" enough for me, and I'd not be successful. I'm newly rny'd... so can't speak from experience yet, but am HAPPY with my decision...
Expect to get happier as time goes by and the pounds drop off!
