Hey! Welcome aboard!
You're bound to be nervous - you're making a life changing CHOICE here - but it's one that will be for the better.
Yes, the surgery hurts, but so does stubbing your toe! I've felt worse pain than what I did after surgery so I wouldnt be worrying about that too much.
I had a catheter for 24 hours after surgery - horrible things but I didn't even know I had one until about 8 hours post op!
I didn't have any nausea at all so was quite lucky.
I was a bit of a slow starter - didnt get up and walk around until 24 hours post op.
Good luck!

starting over
Hi All. Well...I was so scared of the gastric bypass surgery that I chose to do optifast about 9 months ago instead. I went to the 6 months of classes and lost 33 lbs..I could have done much better, but I cheated a lot! Now I think I'm ready for the more perminent solution. I must start over though. I'm with Kaiser in Cal. , and they will make me go to 6 months of classes to "prepare" me for my new lifestyle. I'm still scared of this surgery, but I think the benefits of being thinner will be worth it. I'm glad to have found this forum and you all seem so supportive. Are there any people who went through Kaiser for the surgery? They say it will be performed at the San Diego hospital? Anyone been there and have your experience to share? Tryinhard....

New member....
I'm almost two weeks past surgery date - at 80 years old, I was a little nervous but had full support of my 7 children. Excellent surgeon, Dr. Hoekstra of Elkhart IN with a wonderful staff. No good local support group so looking foward to support from all the participants here. thanks, Q E 9

Wow QE9 - what an amazing decision to have the surgery at 80! I wish you the best of luck - I bet you'll show us 'babies' how it's done!
Welcome on board!

What a brave lady you are!! Until you came along, I was the oldest (that I know of) on this message board!! And now I have a new big sister!
I, too, have no local support group to see in person, and I have relied heavily on the support of my friends here.
Please keep us posted on your journey. We are here for you!

Just take your pain medicine after surgery as instructed and you will be fine, also use ice packs on your stomach, it will bring down the swelling and you will not need to deal with hardly any pain, you will do just great.
