Default Hi I am new to this site, but had the WLS Nov 2004 ( this is long)

Just wanted to say hello to all out there. My name is Mary and I live in Kansas. I had gastro bypass surgery in Nov 2004. I have had a hard time since the surgery but do not regreat a thing.

I weighed 248, Pre op 228 and now post op still sitting at 143. I would probably be at my goal right now if it wasn't for all the set backs. So still trying. My goal is 125. I am short so any extra weight looks dumpy on me. I really want to get a boob job, tummy tuck and lose the extra skin on my inner thighs and arms. I am just very scared to do so since I had pervious complications with surgery.

Ok here it goes. The gastro bypass surgery went great. No problems there. It was on Sept 10, 2006. I went to an oral surgeon to have some teeth removed on Sept 8th. I previously told the surgeron and put it on my paperwork that I had gastro bypass. He asked me how much weight I lost and so forth. I had the operation in his office and he gave me a prescription for pain reliever. I ask him if that precription was something I could take. He said yes. I didn't question it further. I went to get it filled there was no red flags at the pharmacy either. I took the meds as prescribed. I woke up about 3 am Sunday, Sept 10th in extreme pain. I couldn't sit, lay down or even breath. I rushed to the small hospital we have in town, where I learned I had an ulcer and it perferated my stomach. I was bleeding internally. The meds the oral surgeon gave me, were pain relivers but were also anti-flammtory meds. I should have been more carefull and read the papers on the meds but I was too trusting of the doctor. Anyway, I was dying fast and felt myself going. I was then rushed to a bigger hosptial 25 min away to have emergency surgery. I survied.

During the stay however I ended up getting staph infection. Not just a small one either. The doc came in opened my incision back up and cleaned it out and packed it. I had to go home with a whole in my stomach, wash it out 3 times a day and pack it, until it healed. During my healing time I had a pin hole open up right under my rib cage in the center of my incision. It poured out staph infection so much so that it soaked my entire side of my bed. I was rushed back to the hosptial and given very potent drugs, cleaned up and sent home.

I was in bed for 3 months. I was so weak and tired from being in bed inactive. But I made it. I went back to work in December. Everything was going ok. Then on December 31, 2006, matters became worse. I finally lost enough weight that I purchased this little red dress that I have been dying to get. When I put it on the night before , I thought it looked great. Then New Years Eve the next night, it looked like I was pregnant in it. My stomach was sticking out like I was 4-5 months pregnant. I called the doc the next day and went and seen him. He thought it was gastritious since I was in no pain. He gave me some meds. It still didn't go down and I was uncomfortable. Eating was hard. I could only take one to two bits and I felt like I overate. Burping and felt like everything was getting stuck. I went back in and he said I should see my surgeon who did the surgery, that I might have a hernia. Sure enough I did, I was scheduled for surgery in two weeks. They said it wasn't something that deemed emergency but to call back if I felt worse. I did one week later. I couldn't even sit, I had to lay down and I was in pain. I had surgery two days later. I found out I had a hernia the entire length of my incision, which was from under the rib cage to my belly button. The staph infection I had from pervious surgery caused it, and ate alot of tissue away. They had to put a plastic mesh in held with titianium clips and put me on potenant meds again to pervent staph infection again.

This sugery was worse than any of them. They had me pulled and stiched so tight, I was very sore and hard to move. I was even afraid to move, because I didn't want to go through any surgery again. I went through depression again, thinking that I almost lost my family and such. I hated for them to leave me at home when they went to school and work. I was a mess. I finally got back to being myself and I was just so happy to be alive. I almost lost my life twice do to my bloodpressure on the last surgery and this surgery. My blood pressure was 40/20 and I wasn't just white in color I was gray. They were not sure I would make it. But I did. I am here now to say I made it and still trying to get myself back on track. And for others to always check the meds you are given, don't trust anyone. A mild mistake for some can prove fatal when you have had this kind of surgery.

I am still so tired and week in my muscles. It is very hard to excerise since it doesn't take much to tire me out. Now I have new problems.

I ended up sick in August 2007 after a camping trip. I ran fevers and became very week, jelly legged and ached all over. I first I thought oh no I got bit by a misquito and contacted west nile. That is all I need. Nope just was some bug I picked up.

But I still have this problem of being very tired sometimes, with nerve problems in my legs and arms. I feel twitchy in them and it aches. My legs also feel week like they will go out from under me. So not sure what is going on.

The doc is checking my thiasin or however you spell it now. We will see what that says.

Does anyone else suffer these problems?

Default Hi Mary and welcome!

Sounds like you're on the right track by following up with your doctor. I hope they are checking all your levels ie: B12 and the like too. Sorry you've had such a rough way to go. A glimmer of hope ... I'm a little over 5 years out and still losing a little here and there (and gaining a little here and there) but I'm still lower than I was 1.5 years ago, so don't give up hope of reaching your goal, I think (and hope) that after they get you back on the right track you'll get there. Hope you're better soon! Keep us posted.

Sharon

You have already helped all that have and will read your journey. I will check out all meds from other doctors before taking them. I can't imagine having medical challenge after challenge. I hope you get help from posting here. I have. Be encouraged

Default Welcome

I am fairly new to this site to, but I think you will really like it. I had my surgery 4 weeks ago, so this journey is new to me. I can however sympathize with you on the ulcer. In 2001 I had an ulcer (did not know I had one) rupture, I ended up with peritinitus (spp?) too. It was the most pain I have ever felt in my entire life. After 6 hrs in the emergency room I finally went to surgery and was also left with an open wound to take care of for the next 8 weeks until it closed up. Now I have a nice 8 inch by 2 inch scar on my belly..combine that with 2 c-sections and now 6 lap scope scars, I look like a hyrogliphic (spp?).

You have been through so much, but I am sure it has made you are more aware and a stronger person. Be happy with the weight you have lost and if more comes off great!

You should be very proud of yourself not only for your weight loss, but for you medical triumphs!

welcome aboard! Melissa

Oh my gosh, Mary, how awful!!!

I know that meds ARE a problem. I have had a series of Urinary tract infections (before and after GB), and am now on a maintenance dose of antibiotic to heal the damage to my bladder wall, BUT the surgeon told me to take Nexium the entire time I am on that dosage, or I will get gastritis along with other pouch issues. Now I understand why the surgeon is and was so cautious.

Mary, I am so sorry you have had such a disastrous journey. I sincerely hope it is all good from this point on. Thank you for your post. It has and will help others who read it.

Welcome to TT!

Welcome!
I am so sorry you have had such problems. I have had a few complications, but none life threatening. I had my open RNY one month after you. 12-27-04.
I ended up with a double hernia on my incision line, which led me to a partial body lift which led me to severe anemia which led me to blood transfusionas and iron infusions. The plastic surgery also led me to an intubation granuloma on my vocal cord so that led me to the removal of, but it grew back.

Thursday I go back for another iron infusion and I am not sure what I am going to do with the new growth on my vocal cord.....for me all the testing has really been exhausting!! They scoped, probed and scanned just about every inch of me!!

I fell pretty good most of the time, and like you, would have liked to have lost a couple more pounds, but all in all the complications have been worth it to me!

Maybe the hurdle is past and you will be on your way to a sunny future!!

Default Wow

I'm so sorry this has been such a tough ride for you Mary... and Rain, dear heart, I knew about the iron, but not the rest. My heart goes out to both you lovely ladies. I have been blessed to be without complications other than a gall bladder thing a year and a half out, and I'm just beginning to realize how blessed I am.

Smile Thank you all for your posts!

I appreciate all the posts and all the concerns. I am doing ok. The near death experiences taught me to not take life for granted. So in one way it has helped me be a better person.

I apologize to everyone, I wrote down the wrong date of my surgury. It was acutally November 2005.

The reason why I wrote the post, was to alert others to be very careful of the meds. We like to trust our doctors, but do second guess when it comes to meds. Ask and double check them.

I also wrote the post because I wondered how long it takes to reach our goal.

Thanks,
Mary

Wow, you've come through a lot!! I had complications as well, which were pretty serious, but not as bad as yours!!! I am doing fine now though. I am very careful about meds...always have been...since surgery. My pcp (who is well aware of my surgery) just recently tried to give me some anti-inflammatory med for my back. I reminded him of my surgery and that I can't take any NSAID's...he said "oh ya, I forgot!"...so, he gave me Vicoden ES for pain. He also gave me the liquid for when things are really bad because we don't absorb the pills as well. My pcp also tried to put me on an antidepressant, which was a capsule, so I had to remind him I can't take capsules. So, I'm on little 10mg Paxil...which seems to be working just fine. You really do have to be careful, because doctors, even though they know you've had the surgery, they aren't always aware of what we can and can not take. They don't deal with gastric bypass patients all the time. So, it's up to us to know. I'm so sorry you had to go through that. What a nightmare!
