Default 6 days post-op now!

Hi everyone

Quick update guys. Just got back from Bruges today and everything went A-OK. I flew out on my own in the end (hubby had to stay behind to look after the kids but flew out 4 days post-op to bring me home in one piece - bless).

The bypass itself was 1m 30cm- which is about average for my weight/BMI etc. The drain site is still a bit raw but seems to be healing up OK. I didn't have any wind type issues or nausea after the op and have not vomitted at all. I have had MASSIVE cravings for fish and meat (am even salivating at the thought now...mmmm...) and luckily seem to be able keep these down (mushed up) e.g. chicken, ham, fish, prawns as well as the usual yoghurt, porridge. There is definitely a good restriction (1/2 cupful)on the amount of food I want/take at any sitting but, apart from this, I don't feel much difference at all....I was beginning to wonder if it had worked (just my luck!) but I weighed myself when I got home and 8lbs gone....so far, so good. However, it's early days yet, so watch this space.....

Worst thing? Having to sleep on my back all week - just can't wait to get onto on my side again...!!

For all the pre-oppers with Dr D. IMO I think he is extremely good at this op. Despite the very busy nature of his department (his team have done nearly 8,000 of these ops), he was very relaxed and reassuring. Overall, he came across as being slightly taken-aback at his rapidly rising popularity and I'm glad I was able to get in there before he gets too busy, popular or, God forbid, expensive!!

Hope you are all doing great and will defo keep you all posted on progress.

Cheers
Trinket

Congratulations on making it to the losers bench Trinket.

I find it interesting just how different the docs are in their approach to food post-op. Sounds like you can pretty much have anything provided it can be "mushed" up.

I'm 13 days out today and am desperate get off the full liquid diet. Hopefully that'll be on Tuesday when I visit the doc to have my drain out.

Default post-op now!

Hi Corinne

I've heard that Dr D leaves you with a slightly bigger pouch but does a bit more of the bypass part because he believes this achieves the best results. This coupled with the fact that the body needs a good supply of protein to heal properly ties in with his approach on nutrition.

After surgery, I was on a liquid diet for one day only. On the 2nd day I went onto the pureed food diet (which I call mushed up) and will be on this for approx 4 weeks. I have also been allowed crispbread, porridge, pureed fruit and coffee/tea - all in small amounts of course. After that it's soft foods etc and sensible eating. I am wondering whether my weightloss will be more gradual perhaps? Will be interesting to monitor this.

Also, my drain came out 2 days after the op (whilst at the the hosp) - pure relief - aaaaah! Can't believe you're still having to put up with yours 13 days post-op - agony - bet you can't wait to have that out!

Good luck with everything and moving onto the mushy stuff!

Cheers

Hey Gwen - yep you caught my attention. Just having a browse through the forum while I have a second. I'm still in NZ but will be back in a few days. My grandma is still with us (thankfully or not I'm not really sure). She's still in the hospital and hanging on.

I'll be straight onto organising Alton Towers at some stage this month - it's gonna be an absolute blast! What month were you thinking?
