Hey bits, we all know your pain all too well. Isn't it amazing how those pounds we lose bring friends with them when they come back to stay? Difference between you and me, I wouldn't have even have tried to get on a horse before my surgery! Most doctors do want you to quit smoking before surgery, especially an "elective" surgery. Have you tried quitting with the assistance of some of the medical aids available now? My hubby used one when he quit about 10 years ago, and now they have Chantix (?) which I hear is phenomenal! By the way, welcome. Don't be alarmed by the lack of response to your queries, it's the weekend, and most of us are living life...or doing chores...

Bits:
It is the weekend and a lot of us are out enjoying the warm weather while we can. As far as the smoking is concerned, we had one of the doctors from are surgical group tell us that he refuses to do the surgery unless you are smoke free for 6 weeks at least. It is a safety issue with the way you heal.
We also had a Plastic Surgeon at our Support Group last week and he to said that he will not do the surgery unless you are smoke free. Our surgical group has a blood test done just before surgery and that is one of the things they check for.

Take care
Jim and Dorene

Hey Bits, talk to your PCP about Chantix. It's a fairly new oral med that works on the brain receptors & does not contain nicotine. I started smoking when I was 19, tried to quit I cannot tell you how many times. I am officially a non-smoker because of this medicine. It has a very high success rate.

Default Welcome

Bits~
Welcome to thinner times. You will find the answer to any question you may have. Yes, most of the time the doctors want you to quit smoking. For your own health. Going into surgery, they want you to be safe. Anything you can do to make you that much safer is the goal.
Having this surgery has been life changing for me. I knew this was for me when I first heard about it. I would have done anything the doctors asked me to do so I would qualify. I feel like a new person now. I was not easy but it was worth it.
Good luck to you.

Default Chantix works...

First, welcome! Second, if you really want to quit smoking, Chantix works. I'm smoke-free and don't even want a cigarette for the first time in nearly 30 years all told because of Chantix. Hate to sound like a commercial--but I too would go absolutely batty emotionally, physically and every other way every time I tried to quit smoking. I did quit successfully for six years but I wanted a cigarette every single day from age 30 to 36, when I started back again. I stopped smoking May 1 of this year with Chantix, and haven't looked back once. It's amazing stuff.

Hope your journey to your lapband surgery is a successful one.

Default Welcome to TT!!!

Hi there and welcome to the family!

I am also a newbie - only joined in July 2007 and still pre-opp.

As I know how intimidating this forum can be when you first start exploring it I thought I'd give all the newbies a few pointers as to the threads that made an impression on me:

Best Advice for Pre-Op - written and compiled by LisaM

Pouch Rules for Dummies - posted by Baron Patrick

Best Advice for Post-Op - written and compiled by LisaM

Best Food, Best Protein, etc. for Post-Op - compiled by LisaM

What Supplements are you on? - started by Jerrod24

The things people wish they had known beforehand - compiled by LisaM

I have also been asked to add the book "Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies" to this list, I have not read it myself but plan on ordering it via Amazon today - full review to follow shortly

Have a great time and I look forward to following your journey!

PS: If any of the "oldies" have any other threads to bring to our attention please let me know and I will add it to my list.

Hugs
