Hi Everybody...
Hi, I am new to this form. I am thinking of getting the gastric bypass done. My father had it done on march 20th 2006. He was 349 lbs at time of surgery and now he is 190 lbs. He is still loosing but slower now. I have seen his first few days and weeks..........like a lot of people say..........it was hell.
My only problem is I dont have a major insurance. I just qualified for Medi-Cal and dont know if this is covered by them. Anybody know?
Any suggestions?
I am 5 ft 1 in and 301 lbs. walking slower and slower every day. I get tired very easy now. I have 2 beautiful kids and a wonderful husband I would love to share the rest of my life to. My father is the one who encourages me to do it. I am scared at sometimes but he keeps me going.
My father had it covered by his Workers Compensation. (He had a knee injury in Sept 1997. He had 3 knee operations and still kept on gaining weight.)
Thanks,
Liz

Hello and welcome Liz, I do not know about your insurance but I pray you get the coverage if you decide to go this route! It is a long journey and I am sure you will have it all figured out soon!

Liz, I would suggest calling Medi-Cal and asking them if they cover it and what the criteria are. Then you'll know what you're up against. Good luck to you and I hope to hear more from you.

Welcome!
Yup, call Medi-Cal! Not only can they tell you if it is covered, they can also give you specifics as to what they require, ie co-morbidities, doc-supervised diet, etc.
Good luck!

Hi, Liz!
I can hear your pain and frustration in your post. There is no question that this is not an easy journey, and it is important that you get as much information about it as you can, from your dad and all of the resources on the internet. A good book to get is "Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies." This had such wonderful tips in it that made the journey easier, along with some really excellent information on the stages of the journey.
One thing is for sure - you have to WANT it, NEED it, and know that it is the right thing for you, in your gut. Your family and YOU deserve the best of you.
The best of luck,

Welcome Liz!!
Unfortunately I don't have any answers to your insurance questions - I just wanted to welcome you to the family!
I am also a newbie - only joined in July 2007 and still pre-opp.
As I know how intimidating this forum can be when you first start exploring it I thought I'd give all the newbies a few pointers as to the threads that made an impression on me:
