Hi Shelli, Welcome.
I remember feeling like I did a LOT of sit ups....like making up for a life's worth of lack of abdominal exercises. It went away pretty fast. The hospital and doctors are very good at managing your pain, once I went home, I pretty much went completely off the pain meds because they gave me WEIRD dreams! Congratulations on your surgery date. I don't regret any of it!

Default Open is no big deal

I had open and had no trouble. My surgeon suggested I do an epidural for pain management afterwards (in other words, they put in the epidural, then put you under general for the surgery) and I woke up with no pain at all. I was walking around that night and took it easy because they told me to.

I had almost no pain at all (a bit when I turned over in bed) until two days later when they took the epidural out and put me on darvacet (sp?). I only took darvacet at night before bed, (I slept in my own bed with a few extra pillows the first night home) but just took tylenol during the day if I was going to go out. By Post op day 5, I was off the tylenol pretty much. I was at the gym walking in slow motion by post-op day 4.

I don't really know why I did so well. I always look at my surgeon's hands and try to figure out if he has really tiny hands, but he doesn't. He is brilliant, no doubt, and I was in pretty good shape before I went in, but honestly, I healed faster and had less pain than some folks who have it done lap. I know "results not typical" but it can happen.

Just so you know, having open isn't the end of the world. It can be just fine and even if it isn't, pain is temporary. Pride is forever.
