Question An August 2, 2007 Date With Destiny.

Greetings Everyone!!
I'm Linda, 49 Years Old, Feel 100 Years Old, And My Mind Is 21 Years Old!!

I Am Scheduled To Have The Gastric Bypass Operation On August 2,2007!! Unfortunately, I Am Having Trouble Overeating Instead Of Preparing My Body And Mind For Surgery.(surprise, Surprise!!) I Need To Focus On My Goal, But I Find Myself Panicking At Times And Continue To Yoyo As The Time Gets Closer To Surgery. I Really Hope That This Is Not An Indication Of What's To Come.

Hi Linda,
I know it is hard to diet, even before the surgery, but this is the time to really throw yourself into it because if you can lose some weight, the surgery will be easier. The bypass will help, but you will still have to make choices, so anything you can do now will help later. Try to do some walking or some other kind of exercise too. Even a little bit helps.

Don't give up on your preparation. You can start over every single day. You can do it!

I did the same thing with overeating. I had my last meal for weeks before the surgery. I am sure I put on weight. Good luck with your upcoming journey.

Default Welcome!

Welcome, Linda! My surgery is scheduled two days before yours, so I am going through the same thing, trying to lose weight and curb my eating before surgery.

I met again with the hospital dietician yesterday morning to discuss my 1000 calories/day liquid pre-op diet, which will start on July 17, two weeks before my RNY. Until then, I will be doing 2000 calories/day and resuming walking and going to the gym 3 times/week to ride the recumbent Lifecycle, which I haven't been doing diligently recently.

It's hard! If I could have simply eaten less and exercised more using only my own willpower, I would have done so years ago and wouldn't need the tool of the RNY. I'm a food addict, so it's a struggle, even with the RNY less than five weeks away. BUT, developing the healthy habit of eating less and exercising more is the key to my losing more and keeping off the weight I lose from the RNY, so I'm going to keep working at it, easy or not!

I look forward to comparing notes with you on our journeys!

Hi Linda, welcome...soon you'll be equipped with a tool that will make sticking to your plan much easier. August 2 will be here before you know it. Try to be sensible with your eating, you don't want to make things more difficult for your surgeon and yourself by gaining weight!

My surgery is scheduled for 7-19-07. I too, have had trouble with the low fat/low carb pre-op diet. I'm worried that my liver will not be small enough for surgery.....is this possible???? I know the reaso they want you to do the diet is to shrink your liver, but what happens if it is still large?

Welcome to the board.. and good luck to you!

I can tell you that I have been sorta following the pouch rules for the last 4 months... and... the last month has been wicked hard... Tonite.. ice cream.. tomorrow.. Mexican... I have it all planned.. and its no where near the bad choices I had in the past.. but I know I shouldnt do it... I think its normal... my Surgeon says dont sweat it.. I'm going to do fine.. so do what you can.. and give it your all.. but dont sweat it TOO much...

As for the liver shrinking.. they will still do the surgery.. you just increase your chances of having your liver damaged during the procedure...

Good luck to you.. and keep us posted

Default Liver shrinkage

Regarding the question about liver shrinkage, I think it's a relative thing (my opinion). The surgeons want the liver as small as possible so that it does not get in the way of the surgery and need to be moved.

I put myself on a strict diet about 5 weeks before my surgery. I decided that the commitment I was making was to myself. Yes, I'm a food addict, too, but I followed the doctor's orders to the letter (when he told me to go on the liquids prior to surgery), and that gave me the confidence to know that I was doing the best for myself.

I am 2.5 months post op, and I went from severe spinal stenosis (barely walking, in pain, with a cane or walker) to a 53 lb. weight loss, prescribed physical therapy and a program of exercise (which I have always hated out of sheer laziness), and now I can tell you that this life changing procedure, some hard work, and skilled physical therapists have brought me to walking at least a mile, pain free.

I got my life back, and it's hard to recognize - it's been so long! I am so grateful!

You can do this. I KNOW you can!
