intro and hello from Lubbock,Texas
repeat) I joined weight watchers when I was 12 years old failed at it for 40 years:: In 1995 I started taking Redux and lost 100 lbs. It went off the market and I went on Merida. The merida was not half as good at helping with my appetite control.I was taken off merida, due to high blood pressure ! I am now bigger then ever. eek I know yall have felt the HURT,saddness and helplessness as the weight piles on. It has been a a nightmare. I have literally tried every diet known to mankind but failed at them miserably.I was thinner in the years 1995-2005, when I lost weight due to redux. It was a great feeling, getting into great clothing and just feelings overall of feeling better and stronger. How do I express of how my self esteem and self image has taken hit after hit.? insult after insult from normally thin people...? I have a closet full of size 4 jeans that fit for 4 years ,now they won't even advance over my calves.I received a call from my surgeon and will meet with him July 19th.I am ready to do something about this sad feeling of helplessness and "not good enough".I was just wondering what the first meeting and those following will be like? I want so much to do this for myself. I pray it will be a go. I cannot tell my mom nor my sisters of this decision. They would freak. My husband ,however is very supportive. I am so thankful for finding you all.Loads of great and honest information here.I hope once I speak with my surgeon,July 19 introductory long meeting that the green light will be on. Again so nice to meet you all. Blessings Gypsy

Welcome Gypsy:
We just went through all the work ups until we had surgery on May 29th,
We started with a Seminar which one of the Docs of the Surgical Group put on, calling the insurance to see if it is covered, getting appointment with surgeon which he recommends RYN for both of us, psychologist, upper GI Xray, nutritionist, and Dorene having a endoscopies done. After all that we then had surgery but I forgot one thing we had to write a letter of why we wanted or needed surgery. It is quit a process but in the end it was the best thing we ever did. Dorene's blood sugars continue to drop and we both have never sat down to a meal and finished without being hungry. Our twin boys graduated from High School last night and we took them to dinner afterwards. We ordered one meal divided it up ate the protein first and one bite of carbs guess what we were full. 3/4 of the meal we bought for ourselves sits tucked away in our frig. Once again the journey is sometimes long but the end results is well worth it. Enjoy the journey do your research on this forum because there are really great people here with lots of information to help you out with. Blessings
Jim and Dorene

Welcome Gypsy
You have found a most awesome place, welcome. Actually, most every surgical group runs their program a bit differently. I can only share my experience. All prospective patients sit through a film and an informational meeting, Q&A session, then an opportunity to make an appointment with the surgeon. The first surgeon appointment is like most any doctor appointment in that a complete physical and a review of medical history is done. Then comes the weight part - in depth questions about previous weight loss attempts. Lots of discussion about what the surgery is, charts and illustrations etc. More Q&A time. Then a follow-up appoinment after completing all testing and appointments with psychologist, dietician, physical therapist, recreational therapist, pharmacist and account specialist (the money part).
That's it in a nutshell. If you want any more in depth info, just ask. Again, welcome - so glad you are here!

Welcome!
Lots of excellent info here, and excellent folks too! I did not have to attend a seminar- just had a preliminary appt with the surgeon, which I got after my PCP sent a referral and I returned a questionaire to him. All doctors and hospitals have different set ups. I do know that my surgeon seemed pleased that I did not have unrealistic expectations. The shrink thought it was good that I did not expect the surgery to cure all my problems like magic. So, fasten your seatbelt, it's quite a ride!
