My first post
I am in the beginnings of my journey to have surgery for Lap-Band placement.
I've seen a dietician, the Bariatrician, started a three month MD supervised program, and I'm going Thursday for my Psych. evaluation. I feel like this supervised weight loss plan is all a set up the insurance puts you through as a hoop to get to say ok you're a loser at weight loss, so I don't think you could even lose weight with the lap band. I guess you can say I'm discouraged with things.
I've been over wight since a very young child, and I'm tired of the torment. I want to live a part of live in a "normal" looking healthy body.

I'm sorry to hear you're discouraged but keep your head up. The insurance company just wants to see that you've tried. You could loose a pound a month and be good. I guess they just want to know you're serious. Apparently the rules were made up by skinny people.

Hi Janie,
Welcome, they make ALMOST EVERYBODY go through the 6 month supervised plan...boy was I surprised when my Dr told me about it! We all know it's easy to lose weight, but it's the weight that comes back with friends that is the problem for most of us! Best of luck on your journey. We'll be here all the way!

Hi and welcome to the forum! I didn't have to do a 6 month diet, but I did lose 30 pounds between summer and October 23rd. Some of that loss was from that 2 week pre-surgery diet. I was living on salad and Bariatric shakes. Still, the 6 month thing will fly by, and will show the insurance company that you are committed and ready for a change. I know my hospital charges were over $100,000! I had to have 2 surgeries, spent the better part of a month in the hospital. Had to have home oxygen for a month after the hospital part. So, if I were an insurance company, I'd want to make darn sure this person was committed to a life change before shelling out that kind of cash! Granted, in the long run, it'll save them money, because I'll hopefully be very healthy as a result of the surgery...and avoid that heart attack/stroke down the road! Not to mention the other ailments that would have come along with carrying that extra weight around. Still, I can see why insurances would make you do some hoop jumping. Many people aren't committed, and they end up either not losing, or losing it and re-gaining it. That's tragic. Take care. Best of luck on your journey.

I know how you feel.
I know exactly what you mean about the 3 month nutritional program being a joke. I go to a one hour class a month, and they expect you to do good. I know it has to be US that listens and does exactly what they say, because know one else can do it for us, but I am scared too, because I feel like I will fail. I feel like I can't get self control right now. I know I won't be able to eat any of the stuff I eat now, so I feel like I want to endulge in all of it. Isn't that horrible, I guess that is where the psychological stuff comes in. I am sorry to be so negative, I just thought this might make you feel like your not alone. I had to stop smoking and that in it's self is a struggle for me, but I am doing it so far, so If I can do that I am sure I can stop the want for food too. Isn't it funny how all we have to do is say No I can't have that, It just seems like it is such an easy thing, but saying NO to our self is so hard, I wish I understood my mind more, and stop making something so easy to be so hard. I know you will succeed, just hang in there, you will not fail... Just take it one day at a time, and keep reminding yourself that this surgery will all be worth it. It just takes time. Talk to ya soon.
