Oh boy, oh boy!!
Hi Leah here. I had my sugery a week a ago Friday. Out of the hospital Monday and back in to the hospital Thursday from serious dehydration. Before entering back into the hospital I had a serious problem with phlem/spit. It built up and the vomiting began. At differrent times of the day, but everyday. I was miserable. In pain being afraid to eat and drink. So after a day and a half in the hospital and a massive amount of pain meds and nausea meds, CT Scan and an upper GI series I am home now feeling a lot better. A lot better. No one said anything about how really difficult that problem would be. Maybe no one had that problem. I Still feel like I have bout of indigestion. At times it takes my breath away.HELP!!
Today was my first time outside walking and I felt great. It has been a very difficult week and I will admit I cursed myself for ever having did this surgery, espcially last Thursday when my 23 year old son had to take me to ER. I had never seen him as a man only my baby, but man oh man he was all over those nurses to make sure his mother's pain would go away. I was crying and I know he was scared. He didn't show it. After he left the nurses told me they wish there husbands/boyfriends were more like mine. I said, oh no not my husband/boyfriend, my son. She said we could all tell he loves you so, You have a wonderful and devoted son. Is he seeing anyone? Ha, ha.. guess which ever one of you makes me the happiest here he'll be more the grateful.
Question now about protien drinks. How's slim fast? Atkin's. What should I try? HELP!!

Hang in there, Hell week is still in session. Try and get liquids down first thing in the morning and it helps the nausea and vomiting. Rest, walk , sip and repeat. Janie

Sorry to hear about your bad week! After reading some of the stories here, I feel really lucky not having to deal with the nauseau or vomiting...
I keep Slim Fast in my fridge. The low-carb ones are the highest in protein in combination with the lowest in sugar. I can drink a whole one in one sitting...just take your time drinking it. Each can is 20g of protein, which is a big help. I can't tolerate alot of the protein supplements, so Slim Fast is a good substitute...plus it has other good stuff for you in it.
Good luck with your recovery!!

Let the games begin......
Sorry to hear you had such a tough first week... but don't start cursing yourself yet... it's still early in the game and you may make a complete come back in just a few days.
Rest sip, sip sip, walk repeat... be good to yourself and keep up the fluids... try protien drinks like Isopure... it's clear cool lots of whey isolate protein, that's the best kind.....
check in often let us know how you are doing!

They don't call it hell week for nothing. I'm glad you're home and feeling better. As far as protein goes, try to get a bunch of single serving variations. Get as many as you can. Even almost 2 years out, I can't tolerate a single one of them. I wasted so much money on so many different types of protein.
Some people swear by one type, and others by another. Me....I was lucky to get anything in. Be prepared to try alot of different types.

Eh. I agree with Alleusion.. try buying single servings first. Personally? I can not STAND Isopure.. I tried several different flavors, all the same result. I also tried Muscle Milk, Might Milk, and various other supplements...always the same. I am a texture person, and if I eat or drink something and the texture isn't right, I can't tolerate it... Over a month out, and I just found one that I can drink. It takes great patience and try, try, try to find something you like or can at least keep down.

The only thing I could keep down was Pure Protein vanilla shakes from Trader Joes....nothing else. I had to water it down, too. I could only sip a few sips and then wait...
It will get better...and you will progress. It takes time. I think i live on SF popsicles and broth...forever.

Welcome. Its a rough few weeks, but hang in there - super good things to come.
I was not the model patient and didn't know how important protein was that early in the process. For me, I had to be very careful to have small sips of water ALL DAY LONG to get in my fluids. I could take in an oz. or so at a time, thats all. Its a full time job for the first month or so to get your body used to eating again and living with a pouch vs. a stomach. If you can get liquid protein in any form....its great. I now use Nectar - fruit flavored protein powder, vs. the milk or chocolate kinds. Works great for me now. Key thing, outside of everything else is hydration and listen to you body.

Welcome
I never was capable of getting protein in shake form, every single one of them made me gag, had to just coast on that until I was eating pureed foods, then started adding cheese, etc. I still get 90% of my protein needs from low-fat dairy. Hydration and your vitamin supplements are paramount at the beginning. Then get your protein levels up as soon as you can.
