I recall losing about 35 pounds that first month. I had a blockage though, a second surgery 1 week out, and then a severe case of pneumonia! On home oxygen for a month...out of work a little over 2 months! I was in the hospital just 1 night for the 1st surgery. Readmitted 1 week later for an obstruction. Surgery 1 week after that. Home after 3 days..then back again a couple days later with no breath sounds in my left lung! Got home just before Thanksgiving! Yup, good times! On the upside, I feel great now! That 2nd surgery fixed everything! I am able to eat anything in small doses. Haven't had a moment of discomfort, nausea, or vomiting since I had the surgery. I haven't had an addiction transfer. I think perhaps it's because I can still eat good food..so I get satisfied with a little taste. I don't drink alcohol, but did 1 night at a company mixer 2 Friday's ago. It was fun! No dumping..I drank margeritas...slowly of course. I did have a shot of Patrone also! I work for GI docs..so I felt comfy trying alcohol with them there to help me if there was any problem. It was 1 of my docs that ordered me the shot. He said I'd be fine..he was right! Still, I wouldn't make a habit of it. I exercise now..which I am addicted to. I feel scummy if I don't go. I try to go 4-5 times a week. I love going to Goodwill to find clothes. I've found my last 2 pair of cute jeans there for $4.99...Lucky and Gap! Ya gotta love it! I also found some Dickies scrubs for work there! $3.99 and in excellent shape! Woohoooo! I'm just addicted to feeling good and looking nice in clothes again! It's awesome! I'll do whatever it takes to keep living like this!

I had open so I was in the hopsital for 6 days, then one more week in hotel by the hospital and then had staples out and made my way home.

Lost 32 pounds the first month...maybe a little more than I was expecting, but I didn't want to set myself up for failure so I didn't set ANY goals for myself.

I had a stricture at 6 weeks which set me back some. Went back to work at 9 weeks post op. I started real exercise at 7.5 weeks out, prior to this, small walks only.

The day of surgery, they had me up walking short distance and then a shower every morning and a minimum of 3-4 walks around the hospital every day.

you all are awesome, thanks for the details. Ya just never know how it will pan out for yourself ya know? It's kinda like giving birth, everyone shares their story but it's very individual ---no two the same. I just wonder how it will be, other than tough.
Keeping an open mind about it, no expectations, just going with the flow and knowing eventually the bad will pass and I will be telling my success story to someone like me, soon.

Thanks for sharing. Curious why some have open and other lap. Guess prior belly surgeries make it harder to do lap...scar tissue, etc...hmmm...

Good to know. I just cant wait to start feeling like the ME I am inside.

Some docs... only do open. So sometimes its because of medical reasons (like adhesions). and sometimes its due to what the doc prefers.

Hmm...I lost 30#'s the first month. I was also strictured out for the first 4 months and only primarily a liquid only diet. Original hospital stay was 2 days, I had LAP. Subsequent stays 2 days each 3x...

Switch addictions, not yet, but getting control on old bad habits is difficult! Especially when you were never consciously aware you had the problems!!

I'm a SAHM, so being off work wasn't an option, I work 24/7. LOL!! I had help for about two weeks post op, then I felt I could deal. Though I did need additional help every time problems arose. Hope this helps...Best wishes!!

BY THE WAY: Welcome...I'm in Clinton!! Genesis huh? Good choice, they are wonderful there!! Welcome!!

I may not be of too much help but I am 1 week post-op - My Dr only does Lap unless he gets in there and has to do Open - So I had mine Lap, I have 5 small cuts, with 3-4 staples in each - I get them out tomorrow YEAH!!! - I am down 15 lbs 11 days out. I feel great - they have me on puree foods which is driving me CRAZY - but with the vitamins, acid reflux pill, gallbladder pills (2), my food intake is very little - but I do get a lot of water in - as far as the addiction - can't wait for the sex addiction but I haven't drank alcohol in quite a while, can't see me wanting to go there - Great questions!! It amazes me everyday how different our surgeries, recovery, weight loss and Dr orders are - Good luck on yours - it will be here before you know it and READ as much as you can - it will make you more confident when you go in to the hospital.

I'll be two weeks out tomorrow, the 26th. I had lap RNY and only stayed in the hospital one night (I was so happy to be at home!). I stayed out of work 7 work days (11 actual days) and was driving in 3 days. I only stayed on clear liquids for a week and have been on soft solids and protein shakes since.
I didn't think the whole thing was that difficult, the only real pain was in recover and it was gone pretty quickly.

I've lost about 13 lbs and have been walking for excercise.

Good Luck!

I lost 41 lbs my first month. Was in the hopsital for 5 days b/c I had a complication and had to have a 2nd surgery 2 days after the original surgery. I will be going back to work on May 7th which will be 6 weeks off work (but 2 of them were my spring break, so I'm only missing 4 weeks of actual work).

Just me, being curious in Iowa.

Hi there Jina,
My case is not the typical you will find on here... I was one of the lower 2-3% who had major complications. I do not tell this to discourage anyone as I am now glad I went through with my choice of surgery. The first monthy I lost about 30 lbs. I spent 7 weeks in chicago university hospital, and was very malnurished and dehydrated. I couldn't swallow, eat or anything. I ended up getting a central line (hickman line, the fed me hydrated me and gave me meds and blood draws from the 2 ports, the tpn smelled like hamster food, yep I smelld like a rat lol) I had the line for a month and it got infected. I ended up back in the hospital from the central line being infected, I got blood poisoning, lung embolism and pneumonia all from the infection. If that aint enough to kill ya I don't know what is. I know there is a reason God has kept me here, alive and well. This road I have traveled has been a very narrow and at times a dark road. The people on this board are wonderful and many of times I found comfort in the close friends I have founds here. All I can say and this is not to scare ya, but just be prepared for what life brings your way. I wish you many blessings on your new journey you are about to encounter, as everyday is different and one day is better than the last. One thing that got me through those dark days was good support! get yourself a support system and hold onto it. Good luck and many blessings.... Susie
