Is it true?
I said I 'd have some crazy questions. Is it true that your hair falls out? And what about the pre-op diet to shrink the liver? What if it don't shrink?
Help please!!

Yes, so do lose some hair, I have lost a bit, not too much thank God! I try and take all my vitamins everyday and I think that helps.
Some doctors do require liver shrinking diets. Mine did not. I was totally worrried that my liver would big large, and it was not.
You will find all you need to know here!
Good luck to you!

It is fair to say that most of us lost hair...but I don't think any of us went bald, who weren't headed there in the first place. I am 9 months out and have some good new growth, about an inch long...so it started coming back awhile ago.
As far as the liver shrinking thing. If you can lose some fat before surgery, it will shrink your liver. To do this surgery, they need to maneuver around the liver, and it is better if it's smaller. Anything you can do to give yourself an advantage going in to this process is a winner!
Best of luck!

Still have my hair (knock on wood!). My surgeon did not require I lose any weight prior to surgery, but he did say that even 10 lbs would make his job easier! Believe me, I wanted to make him happy, as he was the one holding the sharp objects while I was unconscious!

I was required prior to surgery to lost 10% of my weight for two reasons:
A)Fatty liver
B)To prove I can be strong enough to make this change
And for the hair...I'm a guy so I dont have much to begin with but its very THIN. I can defintely tell its growing at a snails pace.

My doctor's explained we lose hair because we are losing weight so quickly, only time will tell for me. They said to take the vitamins and try try try to get in your protein.
My doc also put us on a 30 day pre-op diet to pre-load us with protein to help make us stronger after surgery and to shrink the liver.
Best wishes,

Hair loss is unavoidable for some...partially genetic, if your prone to hair loss. Partially because the body is using up every ounce of chemical energy you have to offer during the 'fast loss' phase. When it runs out of carbs, and glucose based energy forms, it goes for Protein. Which is why getting protein in is soooo important!! Beings your HAIR and nails are basically harden forms of proteins, the body SHUTS down those systems in times of 'starvation', which is what your body will think it's in. Once your system regulates to the new eating, get adequate protein and vitamin supplies...the hair follicles will be re-stimulated and start to grow again. This re-growth usually happens around the 6th-12th month...depending on diet, genetics, and vitamin intake. There are many factors that cause it, and not a whole lot you can do to STOP it, control it and minimize it is the best you can hope for.
Second: The liver is located directly OVER the area where they will be working to re-route your stomach. If the liver is too fatty or too large, there is a good chance their instraments can damage the liver while holding it up out of the visual field required for a safe surgery. THIS is why they want your liver to be as small as possible...it's one of the larger organs in the body and it is rather delicate...it must be LIFTED in order to work on the stomach and small intestine.
Hope that helps explain things a bit.
