Be there for your friend. For me personally it would have been nice to have someone help me make my meals. Most of the time in the beginning you are eating the same foods over and over again and it can be very dragging to make them when you are not sure you want to eat them. So it would be nice to help get food ready.
Just listen. There are going to be plenty of times when your friend probably won't feel rationale. She/he may not feel like eating but be upset that she/he can not just eat anything, even things she/he does not want to eat. This surgery is a big mind game for many people so just listen.
Take walks with her/him. Help her/him get out and walk. I had my best friend here about 2 weeks after the surgery and we walked a lot. I could not go fast and it was good just to have someone there to talk and walk with.
You are a great friend. Stick by her/his side and that is really the best thing you can do for her/him.
