As many have mentioned the decision to have surgery is a very personal one and the decision to have it should be based on careful consideration of the costs vs benefits. It is a wonderful tool to aid in weight loss, but is not a quick fix...even with the surgery there is still a lot of work involved. However, if you are following the guidelines set by your surgeon then you will lose weight.
As far as how much weight you can expect to lose, the studies that have followed gastric bypass patients show that you can expect to lose 2/3 to 3/4 of your excess weight over the first two years. Longer term studies show that on average, patients keep off at least 1/2 their excess weight over 5 to 15 years. The further out from surgery you get, the easier it becomes to 'cheat the system' because you are able to eat a bit more and foods that may have made you sick after the surgery can become easier to tolerate. The most successful patients are the ones that develop good eating/exercise habits after surgery.
