Also,
My dad and I just added a "Lap-Band" section to his main website (http://www.thinnertimes.com), which should also have some relevant research/info. Since it just went up last night, more should be up over the next couple of weeks - but nevertheless it's an additional resource that you're more than welcome to use. I would like to thank everyone for their responses.

For the person who asked, I am in Central NJ not far from New Brunswick.

Someone else made a comment about my emotional eating and how I would respond if a certain food made me sick. Well I would not eat that food. As much as I currently like twizzlers, I cannot eat them because I get bad acid reflux at night and cannot sleep. I would probably do this with other foods too that make me ill.

Reading the news today I see Charlie Weis lost 90 lbs on his by pass, which is a bit of inspiration since he is a bit of a sports celebrity in an environment where smart food choices are tough.

it appears to be a process that will take 6-12 months before the surgery which is good since you have the evaluations and can try to diet in the meantime.

As many have mentioned the decision to have surgery is a very personal one and the decision to have it should be based on careful consideration of the costs vs benefits. It is a wonderful tool to aid in weight loss, but is not a quick fix...even with the surgery there is still a lot of work involved. However, if you are following the guidelines set by your surgeon then you will lose weight.
As far as how much weight you can expect to lose, the studies that have followed gastric bypass patients show that you can expect to lose 2/3 to 3/4 of your excess weight over the first two years. Longer term studies show that on average, patients keep off at least 1/2 their excess weight over 5 to 15 years. The further out from surgery you get, the easier it becomes to 'cheat the system' because you are able to eat a bit more and foods that may have made you sick after the surgery can become easier to tolerate. The most successful patients are the ones that develop good eating/exercise habits after surgery.
