Introducing....myself!
Hey everyone! Just wanted to stop by and introduce myself. I'm 29 and the single mom of a 5 yr. old little girl. I'm scheduled for a lap RNY on Oct. 18th in Puerto Vallarta with Dr. Joya. I chose to go to Mexico because I don't have insurance coverage and even if I did, it would be unlikely that I would be approved because I don't have any co-morbitities. Right now I weigh about 310 lbs. (my highest ever.) I'm 5'5".
I've been reading forums on obesityhelp.com and myspace, but haven't done a ton of posting yet. This one looked very lively and like there were a lot of great people on it, so I figured I'd join!
My mother had gastric bypass in Feb. and has lost 100 lbs. I can only hope I do as well as she has!
I look forward to meeting you guys and sharing experiences and knowlege!

Hey there....and welcome to the board! That is awesome that you are so healthy.....that helps for the surgery. I'm interested in hearing how it goes for you. I looked into going overseas briefly in case my insurance refused me....but they ended up paying. Congrats on your decision, and tell your Mom congrats on her loss. You will do fantastic! As you know, this journey is incredible, and some hard work....but so worth it. We're happy to have you.

HI and welcome! With your mom having just gone thru this, you pretty much know what's up. We'll be here to help with things you don't want to ask your mom about!

With That Said, Can I Ask Why You Are Going To Puerta Vallarta For Surgery? Is That Safe?

Thanks for the welcome everyone!
Sorry, rainrain, I think I just figured that everyone knows that it's cheaper to do it in Mexico. The cost of everything, including airfare and hotel stay after surgery, is about $12,500. That's 1/2 to 1/3 of the cost that it is in the states. I could not afford to have even a lap band done here.
Doctors in Mexico were doing lap bands before they were even approved in the US and the doctor I chose has done many RNY surgeries. I spoke with a number of his patients personally and they all had great experiences. There are many doctors in the US doing gastric bypass that have a lot less experience than the doctor I chose does.
I'm not worried at all about getting it done in Mexico.
