Well, I thought I would "weigh" in too with my 2 cents:
First of all, congrats on getting a date. The insurance game is probably the worst part of this whole process!
As for soda--that's probably the next hardest part. The bubbles initially gave me some discomfort--and I was conditioned not to drink it. I really haven't had much of any in the past two years. Though, if it sits out for a while and loses some of its fizz--I'm cool--but then it tastes like shit so I don't drink it anyway.
For some reason, Mike's Light Hard Lemonade and beer don't seem to bother the pouch much--but I don't drink that often. (But more than I did before the surgery...)
Sugary and fatty things still give me trouble. If something has more than 8 or 10 grams of sugar in a serving, I avoid it, except for Golden Grahams--the dumping is worth having a bowl of those every now and again.
Fried foods just tear me up, and as I don't want to have diarrhea in public, I avoid those and they are largely out of my diet completely. If I'm going to spend all this time and money and psychological stress trying to get healthy--the fried foods are going to be the one thing that completely undoes it. I know what I was like before--and I DO NOT want to go back to that version of myself!
The only thing that is a vice and carb-y is bread and crackers. I eat crackers almost every day, and bread (usually wheat though) at least 3 or 4 times a week. If I cut that out of my diet, I bet I could lose these last 10 or 15 pounds. But, I've been at the same weight now for over a year and think I've hit my new set point. (Meaning I've still got work to do.)
This surgery isn't going to undo your addiction to food--you still have to work at it--it will just make it easier to make better decisions. You're going to be glad you did it!
