Default cobra

I had anthem blue crss.I was laid off this past friday. I'm being offered cobra.I was told that if I go with cobra I would be under the same policy as if I was working for my employer. My question is should I go with cobra or purchase my own imdividual insurance thru an insurance company?

What will it cost you to go with Cobra, as compared to buying your own individual policy? You'll probably be better off going with Cobra.

I would recommend for you to stay with the Cobra, because nothing will change with your insurance. If you purchase an individual policy you may have different criterias to meet.

If you stay with COBRA, it is the same policy you had with your employer but you have to pay the same group policy premium they would have paid for you. A group policy is always more expensive because it doesn't take into consideration a person's health, pre-existing conditions, age, BMI, etc. If you got an individual policy depending on all that above it would probably be cheaper but they might exclude any previous or ongoing conditions to get the cheapest rate. For example, if I went through my work it would cost $350 to cover my kids but with two individual policies it only costs $65 each. It really depends on what you need.

You paid $33, but your employer paid something for you, too. You'll be paying the $33 PLUS whatever they were paying for you. It will probably be more than double.

The Cobra premium is 102% of the cost unless the company subsidized for a certain period. So potentially you could be paying ALOT more than now. My cost for coverage is around $26.00 per pay period so about $52.00 a month. If I would take COBRA it would cost me about $300 per month.

Exactly, if not more. I know right now I pay nothing for my personal insurance through my employer but they pay $300 a month for me.
