my cost for cobra for me and my family was like 1100.00 a month.....whatever you do ...do not let insurance lapse for more than 60 days. If you do any future insurance company could exclude any claims due to pre-existing conditions.
If you do not believe me check it out. IF your insurance policy covered WLS then you are probably best off paying the cobra amount.
Good luck!

When I was working I paid 20 bucks a week for medical & dental insurance combined (REALLY good coverage, too)...
When I was laid off, my cobra coverage was 441.19 /month. And it was just raised to 489.92/month this month.
Because of the date I was laid off, I don't qualify for the cobra assistance from the link above.. I missed it by two weeks.
This is still cheaper than going on my husbands plan as his spouse so I keep paying (through the nose)

I worked for Vons (a Safeway Company) for nearly 10 years and just quit back in September 2008. I paid about $12/wk for the insurance but when I quit, my cobra went from a possible $600 and something dollars to nearly $900 a month. I cant believe that cobra can be raised to 1 and a half times what it would cost if you werent on cobra. Ridiculous. But you are right, it is cheaper to pay it than it is to go on a spouses plan. My husband would lose half of his paycheck to pay for insurance if he were to add me and the kids. Not worth it! I understand where you are coming from.....

Wow - pay for Cobra now and get the surgery. You want to be on the same terms and you certainly don't want to switch in the middle of the year.
Plus Obama has that law about the difference in Cobra being paid ... look into that.
Bottom line is that although Cobra is expensive, if you have a plan that covers bariatric you should stick with it.
Another thing to consider is that I couldn't get insurance without a group plan because of my weight.

I was on COBRA at the end of 2007. I checked around and it would have cost the same or more to go with another insurance company. I had my whole family on mine, with medical, dental, and vision. It was more than $1,000 a month on COBRA. I had been paying a few hundred a month for coverage through my employer. Insurance is really high in California. It's cheaper in other states.
The key thing to remember about insurance is that if you keep it going with COBRA, then start working elsewhere and get new insurance, your coverage continues seamlessly. It covers conditions you had under the previous insurance. If the COBRA expires or you don't get it, when you get new insurance, you won't be covered for any pre-existing conditions for the amount of time you went uninsured.
Good luck!
