Default classes

So if you meet the 10% before the classes are over you don't have to finish the classes? or you still have to finish but then you still have to keep the 10% off while you wait.

Oh no, you still have to do the classes, but other than orientation which is mandatory and the Lifestyle class (which is not mandatory at Richmond), the pre-op and post-op nutrition classes aren't done until you reach goal anyways. But yes, once you reach goal you have to maintain it until surgery day or they could reschedule you.

I'm sure someone already post in this thread but just in case this is the order at Richmond:

Orientation (get starting weight and you can start losing the next day)
Psych
1st consult with the surgeon (get your goal)

Once you reach goal:

Meet with case worker (they will verify you made goal and schedule rest of appts before surgery, usually broken up between 2 days)
Physical
Meet with anesthesia dept
2nd surgeon consult
Pre-op class (talks about what to expect on surgery day and take care of yourself afterwards)
Post- op nutrition

And they weigh you at every single appt and class. They say average time is 6 months from orientation BUT it is all up to how fast you get to goal. Mine took 4 months from orientation and I feel like I goofed off on the diet for a month or so.

Default that would be nice

I talked to the doc today and she said that i am at the bottom of the list for friday options classes. I will know in about 2 weeks if I will start my classes in september or if it will be later. I am so excited when I heard i wont have to wait a whole 3 months before i start classes.

Hello, sorry you may have already posted the answer to this question - just curious what Kaiser your going to? I am going to the Riverside Kaiser and I have my first options class next Tuesday. I still don't get this 10% thing because at Riverside you go to orientation and then can start loosing weight because that is your official weight and then get the letter that you are on the wait list. I attended orientation on May 21st and so it's been about three months for me to start. So I guess my question still is what happens if I loose the 10% before the 20-weeks of options is done - do I get to have the surgery early? I am actually pretty close to already loosing the 10% so I am really curious about this.....help!

Jewel, I'm pretty sure you still have to finish the classes even if you meet your goal before you finish them.

Default sad truth

yes it is true. I asked my doc if you meet the 10% early if you get to go ahead of the class since you meet standards. nope it just means that now you have to keep the 10% off during the 20 to 26 weeks of classes and through everything up until the day of the surgery.

Sorry to pop the bubble. it bummed me out to.

Wait, you said you were going through Richmond, right?? What 20-26 weeks of classes is he talking about? Is this your surgeon or your PCP because I *just* had mine done at the end of June and a friend had hers done a month ago and we didn't take that many classes, there are only like 3 or 4 that are mandatory and they are a couple of hours each.

Yay Jeweld, good to hear you get to start soon. In Orange County you have to do the classes absolutely no matter what, they encourage you to exceed 10% and say you can't disqualify yourself by losing too much, but they won't give you the letter to take to the surgeons unless you've met 10%. It's also a mandate of the surgeons' I believe.

I think all of the recent posters are in southern CA Lynette, completely different program down here

Thanks for all your replies - I thought so too, I guess just wishful thinking. This sucks! I know it will be good in the long run, but when other people are getting their's done in a few months it just seems like forever away. Sorry for complaining

Default Waiting game but for all the right reasons

I am glad actually for the classes then i can better prepare myself for everything. The people that i have talked to that have the WLS done they dont really tell me much, other than it was worth it. I know how it feels about it feeling for ever. I am just glad i get to start things. I have had to wait 5 months for this to start to kick off in riverside ca. =)
