Insurance will not pay???
Hi everyone, I am just starting my journey and our insurance company stopped paying for GB a couple of years ago. My husband is willing to sell some of his retirement for me to get the surgery, but I want to have an idea of how much this is going to cost us. I have heard that the average is $15,000.00. Does that sound right to you all?
My husband works for UPS and we have AETNA PPO.
I have yet to make a dr's appt. I plan to do that this week. I am scared that none of them will take me since our insurance won't pay. Do any of you know how this works?
Thank you so much in advance for your help!

lap band is about 15K lap rny is about 25K
You can also apply for care credit or capital one financing for healthcare...many providers accept this and you can make monthly payments on the surgery....rather then get penalties for cashing in your retirement.
Check with your surgeon, they probably have financing options they work with...
at least this is true here in the Midwest

i'm a self pay and doing the care credit financing deal with my surgeon. It's basically just a medical loan you pay through your surgeons office
The breakdown from my surgeon was 6800 for the procedure and approximately 15k for the hospital stay. They give you the costs for a 5 day stay, which is only in case something were to happen. Typically its only 2 days. Then the consult/program fee if they have one and 800 for the anestheia.. so about 23k

I'm doing care credit too. I'm supposed to get like a "credit card"
once I pay back the initial loan, I can use the credit balance for any other medical procedures.

I have been fighting with insurance for the past year
I was told by Aetna that I had coverage so for the past year I have been jumping through hoops. I got everything completed in March and called the insurance company after my 4th appeal to see what the problem was and they said my husbands company had that as an exclusion on his policy and they appologized for my inconvience for all the testing and stress. So I am taking out a loan for 15,500 and will be having the surgery on April 28, 2008. I would take it out of my husbands retirement because I want to be there when he retires.
Good Luck!

I highly recommend Care Credit -- I've used it for Lasik surgery and for extensive dental work that wasn't covered by my plan. I'm thankful that my GBS is covered by insurance, but if it wasn't I'd use Care Credit.

My hospital bill alone was nearly 27,000... total with the surgeons and anesthesiologists was about $40,000
I have Aetna... and it was included in our plan!

Care Credit
We seem to have this program available for everything BUT WLS... So I hope that I get approved through my insurance.
