If your insurance won't cover it and you become a 'cash' patient, make sure you ask a few important questions. Really make sure you understand how much you'll be paying for what, not just an 'estimate'. And be sure to find out what happens if you have any complications from surgery. If you have to stay in the hospital longer, will your insurance cover it? What if you need another surgery due to a complication, does insurance kick in then? What if you need to go to the ER after you're already home from the hospital ... what if ... what if ... just be sure you fully understand what you might be getting yourself into.
I wish you the best of luck ...

I have Aetna also. My hospital bill was $35,000. I haven't seen the surgeons and anesthesiologists part yet. I also don't know if that $35k is firm or will be reduced when it goes through insurance.

I "think" I will only have to pay $2000 of it though due to yearly caps.

These are good questions, but typically insurance won't cover anything remotely associated with something that was already excluded from the policy. Up to and including an ER visit for a complication.

Just putting that out there.

I was blessed with insurance that paid for my surgery so I can't answer that question but I did want to say that I admire your attitude and determination to have the surgery even if you have to pay for it yourself. Also, you must have a wonderful husband if he is willing to sell some things to make it happen. Best of luck to both of you!

I had RNY surgery in Mexicali, Mexico in January. The cost was $12,500. Everything went smoothly and I continue to make steady progress.

My insurance company has an exclusion for bariatric procedures, and I could not afford the $30,000 that it costs locally. I am glad this option was available to me. The doctor in Mexicali is a member of the American Society of Bariatrics and has excellent credentials.
