look.. i had a girl on the myspace forum i belong to ... tell us all that she gained 40lbs on the STRICTLY medifast diet... and now instead of 20 lbs her doc requires her to lose, she has to do 60-80 lbs.... there is nooooooooooooo way in hell that you can gain 40 lbs on that diet alone, and im sorry.. there are other issues there that should maybe prevent you from getting surgery then.

what goes through my mind is.. ok, you want support .. fine... you want advice.. fine... but its like an alcoholic going to an AA meeting and saying, hey... lets all go to the bar tonight, kick back a few drinks and talk about our drinking problems...

10 lbs is nothing if you put your mind to it... for example, stop drinkin soda... that was a bigggggggg thing for me and i see how much weight pre-op i dropped just by doing that alone! you can do it, i have faith in you. we all have food addictions, or else we wouldnt all be fat.

it took me well over 2 months to lose 10 pounds.....so, its not nothing, but....it's not insurmountable either.

I just went back through all 4 pages and there was nothing in here that could be considered "nasty" or "un-sensitive". Yeah it sucks you gained weight on you 6 month diet. I too gained weight while on a nutrionist controlled diet, but it wasn't my pre-surgery diet. When I saw the surgeon, he said I had to lose 10% of my total goal loss. I wanted to lose 140, so I was required to lose 14 pounds. I saw him a month before my surgery (this is 4 months after he told me I had to lose 14) and I'd only lost 7. He was so not pleased. He told me that if I didn't lose the other 7 by surgery date, it would be cancelled.

I don't know what kind of support you were looking for. If it was a "oh I'm sorry and your insurance sucks and it's okay" then this is definitely not what you're going to find here. While we have some that will hold your hand and make everything okay, we also have some that will be blunt, honest, and completely bitchy in delivery, and then there are some in the middle.

Personally, I'm tired of seeing people tell others it's okay to eat crap they shouldn't be eating, because honestly...it's NOT okay. Common sense and logic need to be applied. And I'm getting off track.....

Bottom line.....your insurance is right. They need to see you're committed to a healthier lifestyle and that you're not going to waste their money by having this surgery and sabatoging yourself a year or so out. It's also something surgically necessary as it does help to shrink your liver. If you're having your surgery laproscopically rather than open, this is essential.

Have another go at it, cut out the things like soda and snacking. Stick to 5-6 small meals evenly spaced throughout the day. Oh also, sometimes, our brain gives us an "I'm hungry" signal when we're really just needing some water. Before heading for the food, try having some water. If the hungry sensation doesn't go away by 30 min later, then go eat. Celery is great....you lose more calories chewing it than you gain by eating it.

It's too bad the pgh3rivers has chosen to take down her post.
It seems to me to be indicative of still not being in a place in her head to take the problem and address it head on. For better or worse, when you are about to go into WLS, you had better be ready to take this head on, and not hide your head in the sand.
While its true, your going to get varying degrees of support/sympathy/empathy here, I think the one thing that is universal to just about everyone i've seen on the forum, is a stick-to-it-ivness, and realistic mindset, and acceptance of both successes and failures. It happens. The people here are all folks who are going thru the same thing, or have gone thru it, and KNOW, that in order to succeed, you MUST take a proactive, and honest with ones' self approach to it all.
Again, I suggest more time with the program psychologist. Thus far in my personal experience, that has been the single most helpful part of this whole process....getting my head in the right place. I cannot expess the importance of that enough, and it's importance in general isnt stressed enough, both here and elsewhere.

Look. People care enough about you to have posted their feelings and thoughts about your situation here. You asked for opinions, and got them. Sure some may have not been delivered in a manner well received by you, but they are opinions, nonetheless. If the roles were reversed, these folks are sticking their necks out to offer their care and their opinion on the matter, and are getting lambasted by you for doing so. But they are not running away....

UGH.... to take down your original post after we all put our time and effort into replying to you is just CS.... not to be a biatch or anything, but I am.... See, this is why I usually don't reply to newbies...

Yep, I gained weight on my 6 month supervised "diet"...others think that is a "red flag"...or a warning sign that I might not be committed to the surgery. Here I am 2 years later and still down 140lbs.... will I gain or lose more in the future...maybe....only I can make the scale move in one direction or the other. Whatever, everyone has their own opinion and only I know if I can make this tool work for the rest of my life.

Cindy, please allow me to clarify, since I think the world of you....

When I mentioned "red flag," I was referring to the person like the originator of this post, who poses a certain position, which in my mind wasn't a good mind set. Her post indicated red flags in general, and the one that cinched it for me was the 15 lb. weight gain. Clearly one can get their heads on straight, as you obviously have, after that weight gain - it is the entire picture that I was referring to.

A weight gain, at any time in this process, is, and will always be, a warning sign -- now this is for ME - I'm not saying it's true of the rest of the world.

Please accept my apology, Cindy, if I have in any way offended you.

Claire
