Most insurance companies look at the previous 5 years for weight hx. For BCBS of NC, you would need to meet 4 of 5 years. We take the highest weight listed for each year. It's ok it you lose weight on the supervised diet. AS for gaining weight, either on the supervised diet or waiting for ins approval, it depends on your surgeon. Some surgeons will postpone surgery if you gain too much weight. Gaining weight increases fat around the liver and there is increased risk for complications during the procedure. Most competent surgeons will request that you lost weight to help decrease this risk. Some put you on a weight loss program the week before to help shrink the fat around the liver. I review gastric bypass surgeries all the time. And have been asked serveral times to change the dates because the patients had gained weight. I don't mean a few lbs because those that are also trying to quit smoking will have a hard time trying to maintain their weight. You also don't have to lose weight during those 6 months. You can do the follow up and tell the doctor you are following the diet and exercising, but just maintain your weight. That's what I did. Well actually, I lost 5lbs in 6 months. Sue
