I had never heard of my carrier before starting my current job. It's called NCAS but uses the BlueCross BlueShield of Maryland network of doctors. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that my case will be assigned to someone who's in a really good mood that day!

Thanks Cindy & Renee for replying! It makes me feel better knowing that I'm not the only one who gained weight during my supervised "diet". I figure that, worst case scenario, they tell me I have to lose a certain number of pounds before approval but I can and will do this.

Wishing it was the end of October so I'd know already! Have a great weekend all!

I am in your same shoes. I lost 1 lb the second month, 4 lbs the third month, back to original for month 4/5 and gained a lb from the original in the last month. GRRRRR!

I am waiting on insurance approval. I keep calling, but they say they don't see it in the system yet. One of the (many) folks that I have talked to said it won't be on the computer until it's through the medical review board. Nobody else has said that. One person even said that if it isn't on the computer by today (I still need to call) that my dr. will have to resubmit, which means we've lost an entire week. You would think as much as we pay for insurance it would be easier. They do work for US!!! Doesn't seem that way though.

I've got Health Alliance and they require you to do six months of supervised (telephone!!! - what a joke) diet with their own 'diet coach' and at the end of the six months you have to have lost 5% of your current weight in order to satisfy their requirements. My 'diet coach' told me that they would keep the case open (and the denials coming) until the 5% requirement was met - that it showed the ability to stick to a diet - that if you couldn't do 5% in six months how in the world would you be able to handle the stringent requirements after surgery.

I just had a discussion with my PCP yesterday about this... he said, "what is the point of the 6 month supervised diet... if you do well, they'll say you can do it on your own and don't need the surgery... if you don't do well, they'll say you're non-compliant..."

He just shook his head.

I don't mind ins. making me wait a bit... Lord knows I've used the time wisely to gather information and to PREPARE myself for this... but this isn't really the time to put me under a microscope and watch my weight bounce around... talk about a stressor!!!

Well girl, you just scared me. I hadn't even thought about them saying that since I did the 5% in six months that I can do it on my own. The 5% took me down to an approx. 41 BMI - still way too high - and quite truthfully, at 2 pounds a month that would mean 4 more years of stress on my heart, 4 more years of diabetes, 4 more years or extra weight on my knees, etc. etc. etc.

They've just GOT to approve.

Just thought I'd jump back in to say that, despite my 20-25 lb weight gain, I was approved for the surgery. I imagine that there are differences from one insurance company to the next but the idea of requiring weight loss during that 6 months is ridiculous. Sounds like Toony's PCP is a smart guy!

Anyway, I whole-heartedly agree that the wait for insurance approval is the really awful pre-op factor but keep your head's up...sometimes even insurance companies make the right decision!

Good luck all!
