Thanks!
Kizzy,
Thanks for the info and encouragement! My fiance vetoed the "out of country" idea, and I recently posted a new thread- I decided to stay very loca actually- San Francisco. Yes, it is more expensive, but my surgeon does free follow up for LIFE for self-pay patients, and travel/hotel, etc are not necessary so I figured this was a pretty good deal.
Good Luck to you- stay in touch so we can see your progress after surgery! I'm so excited for you!

follow up for life included?!that's great! as a self pay, i get follow up for 90 days then pay $500/visit after...which aint happenin'....NC is definitely the expensive way to go. presurgical consult was $500 and "registration" or whatever they called it was $500. all in addition to the cost of the surgery and anesthesia and hospital and pre op testing. argh! ka-ching!

Kizzy,
I dont want to be a downer...but....
I have had VSG and I still have dumping. Lots of foods still make sick.
If I eat anything with to hight of fat, to high in sugar or I eat carbs- any carbs....I "dump".
I can't eat grilled chicken, pasta, bread, overcooked shrimp, high sugars, high fat, corn, and I'm not even sure what else I can't eat because I'm only 3 months out.
All of the above foods make me feel "Stuck" then I get the foamies and then I throw up.
I am not "supposed" to dump with the Sleeve. But I do.
Do I mind? not really. It doesnt bother me at all to be honest. It does keep me from eating certain things that are "bad".
It might change I am early out still, Things change, some things not tolerated early out are tolerated fine later. If it doesnt change and stays exactly the same I am still over the moon with this surgery.
Overall, I am THRILLED to have the sleeve. I wish I had done it sooner, is my only regret.
I just want you to know that this surgery is all about changing your eating habits. You have to be ready to say, "I can never have [insert specific food here]" You can't alter your body and expect to eat the same food.
I just wanted you to know that lapband, Rny and VSG are all life changing.

Thank you for sharing that...ugh its so confusing now, I've been doing more research on the sleeve and it seems to have less complications now I don't know which one I want LOL

Can I ask how old you are? I see you've lost over 50 pounds in 3 months...thats awesome congrats...
I'm 5'2" I think my only concern with the sleeve is that its not going to give me results like the bypass but seems like its giving you results....

I am 40 years old.
I have wonderful insurance that covered the sleeve. If it had not been covered I would have gone with Rny.
I am only 5 foot, with my age working against me. I also have a leg that has been broken twice with 4 surgeries in one year to repair it. I dont exercise like I wish I could but as the weight drops its easier for me to move. Hopefully I'll be back excercising soon.

It all Depends...
If you are going to a very experienced surgeon, you shouldn't have too many concerns about complications per se. The statistics show (so far) that the Sleeve has (almost) as good of results as RnY, with FEWER complications. The numbers don't lie. And although I do not doubt that dumping and intolerance happen (obviously), they are MUCH less common with the Sleeve.
I am a self pay patient getting the Sleeve, my ins pays for RnY but I did not want bypass. My surgeon is one of the TOP, esp when it comes to the Sleeve procedure. His comment was: If someone is self pay, I would NEVER recommend RnY over the Sleeve. To pay more of your own money for such similar results is not worth it." Or something to that affect.
Anyways, Kizzy- do more research. I originally started out wanting LapBand, then realized it is not for me.... came to the conclusion after some soul searching that the VSG IS FOR ME. Either way, RnY or VSG.... if you follow the program and use it properly, you will lose a lot of weight and change your life. Best of Luck and please keep us updated on what you decide!
