2 week clear liquid diet post op
Hi all,
SLEEVE 1 week post op and 5/14 days into clear liquid post op diet.
Im having an issue about what exactly I can have. Im not sire if I should be avoiding any particular nutrients but I need SOMETHING to keep up energy levels etc.
This is a print out of my total food intake yesterday:
Im worried about the carbs for a start but this diet only consisted of
Breakfast Yoghurt, Banana & Custard, Smooth, Mullerlight, Muller* 1 Pot/200g
Snacks Ice Cream, Vanilla Dairy Ice Cream, Sainsbury's* 0.13th Of Tub/125ml
Drinks Juice, Orange, Pure, From Concentrate, Sainsbury's* 1 Glass/200g
Other Soup, Tomato, From Heinz, Canned, Weight Watchers* 175g
Other Juice, Orange, Pure, From Concentrate, Sainsbury's* 150g
Other Smoothie, Blackberry & Blueberry, Tropicana* 125 ml
Other Soup, Tomato, From Heinz, Canned, Weight Watchers*
Other Ice Lolly, Freezepops, Calypso
Calories (kcal) 542.1
Protein (g) 14.5
Carbohydrate (g) 104.0
Fat (g) 8.0
Fibre (g) 4.9
Fruit & Veg 8.1
Water (litres) 0.0
Im not sure what else I can have. My OH has gone out and got some protein powder today so I can make some smoothies with more protein and im also going to blend up some veggie soups so i dont have any lumps.
Just wondering if my diet above looks ok, and also if anyone can recommend anything else to eat (well drink) with NO LUMPS or MUSH (liquid only)
Thanks everyone
Carl

From what I can see you could do with some more milk in your diet. Milk has protein which will keep your energy levels up. You can make runny custard with Canderal instead of sugar, sugar free milkshakes and just plain milk. Use semi-skimmed milk. Try not to have too much fruit juice as it has a high natural sugar content. Make sure you also have water or sugar free squashes.
It does take time for the body to adjust. You have been used to high volumes of food and your body is feeling a bit starved - you have also had surgery so your body needs rest as well.
I wish you all the best in your journey - sounds as if you are doing well though!

I'm not familiar with grams, or the actual brands you're using, since I'm not in the UK. However, a few things catch my eye: First of all is the ice cream, that's a big no-no...too much sugar, fat, and calories. Swear off ice cream...this isn't the type of food you want to be eating after surgery unless it's a rare special treat.
Is your yogurt fat free and no sugar added? If not, it should be. Better yet, try some plain Greek yogurt (Fage and Oikos are the brands we have here in the US). It's super high in protein, and very good for us.
Orange juice isn't the best thing to be drinking either. It has way too many calories, and the citric acid is hard on your healing tummy.
Tropicana Smoothie....not sure if that's the same type as we have here, but they're absolutely loaded with added sugar, and has hardly any nutritional value at all.
You only got 14.5 grams of protein for the day. My surgeon recommends 60 grams, some surgeons recommend 80 to 100 grams. Not having enough protein will make you weak, and in a couple of months you'll start to lose your hair. Definitely get this count up. Buy some sugar free protein powder, and mix it with either skim milk, or unsweetened soy milk.
Did your surgeon give you any dietary guidelines? Some surgeon's are a bit negligent in that respect. I'd recommend buying the book, "Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies". Weird title, but it's a really good book and full of excellent information. I bought mine from Amazon.com.
Best of luck!

Hi all,
How odd. Im being told everywhere to avoid orange juice and tomato soup because of the acidic value etc yet am being told by my pre op nurse to drink it.
Don't eat the ice cream, 'cos it contains too many calories... yet as you can see on the diet sheet below, it quite clearly says eat it to try and keep your energy levels up.
I was also told to blend soup (which I do) and drink plenty of smoothies (which I do, although not I make them myself and add a little protein powder to the mix).
Here, what do you think....
see why im a little confused now?
Carl.

Wow Carl, that diet is unlike anything I've seen before. The only thing on there that my dietician would approve of is the milk...but we're told to drink skim milk, not semi-skimmed. I guess there's a big difference in the opinion of post-op nutrition between doctors/countries. The thing that surprises me most is the recommendation to eat 1500 calories a day. I'm over 2 months out, and most days I only eat 600-700 calories a day (and that's 3 meals and 2 snacks).
However, I'm not a medical professional, and you should do what the doctor tells you. Just curious, does your surgeon's office have a registered dietician (nutritionist), or just a nurse who gives nutritional advice? I ask, because there's a huge difference in the technical knowledge between the two. If you're not already seeing a dietician, it would be greatly beneficial to schedule some appointments with one.

At the end of the diet they give you it says "if you keep taking taking this latter kind of liquid you may not lose weight"
It also points out to only eat ice cream as a "rescue liquid" for the shakes and lightheadedness. I am thinking they didn't intend for you to eat ice cream or milkshakes everyday.
Milk is a great way to get protein. It is filling also. There is 8 grams of protein per cup of milk. I also use milk instead of water in my tomato soup, so this will help get you more protein and be easier on the tummy.
You can also add protein mix to your pudding. Put vanillia protein powder in with vanillia sugar free pudding. You can put any flavor protein powder in with any pudding flavor. Mix and match flavors.
The bell plantation has dry peanut butter mix that has a good amount of protein without the bad oils in it. You can add it on top of yogurt, pudding, ice-cream that is sugar free. I'll have to post the web site after I am done this this post, so I can go look it up.
Good luck getting in the protein. At 2-4 weeks out is mainly about healing, but it is never too soon to think about sugar intake because when you are done healing and you keep up the sugar you will not lose weight, or you will lose less.
Hang in there and I hope things have gotten easier for you.

I was also told to avoid tomato and orange juices, but if I remember right, the creaming process or adding milk buffers the tomato into a less acidic state, thus easier on the stomach. I think talking it over with a nutritionist or dietician is a great idea. You sure wouldn't want to cause yourself any additional complications. Good luck!
