Default Pre-Opt. Diet - BMI Issues Ect.

Hi,

I am new here, but not new to weight loss! I am in the current process with Kaiser on WLS. I just attended the 2 hr. WLS Class that they require prior to the 4hr. Orientation.

Here are my stats:
5' 4"
240 Lbs.
40-41 BMI

I have a few questions. The first is for those of you who have gone through Kaiser. Do they require the pre-opt. weight loss to be 10% of your overall body weight or 10% of your projected total weight loss inorder for you to be at a healty BMI?

The reason that I ask is if I need to lose 24 lbs before surgury (which would be 10% of my overall body weight) I wil be under the 40 BMI that Kaiser requires for Lap Band surgery and I do not have any other health conditions that my obesity effects. Although i have cronic knee, back and hip pain, I am sure that it doesn't count!

Is there anyone on here that has started this journy with these simmilar "low" BMI issues? I know that I need this surgury as a tool for my overal success and I am concerned that I will be fighting an up hill battle on getting approved!

Thanks,

Ash

Usually they take your starting BMI to see if you qualify for surgery. Then if you lose enough weight to drop below 40 on the pre-op diet, it does not disqualify you from having surgery. I would verifty that with your insurance company, don't just assume that because that's how most do it that's how yours will do it. But that is usually how it's done.

Hi Ashley
I am also with Kaiser and am starting my classes in January in Panorama City. There is a lot of information about Kaiser on here if you put the word Kaiser in the search bar you will come up with information galore. I see that you are also in California. Which Kaiser will you be using?
