Default Alcohol and Lapband?

Just curious what others' experiences have been. My mom had lapband two years ago and doesn't drink alcohol anymore because she says it hurts her esophagus. She will very very rarely have a small amount of white wine, but she says she can only tolerate sweet white wines like Riesling. I wonder if that's because the sweeter wines have less alcohol.

Drinking alcohol would not be the cause of her esophagus problems (OK, maybe if you were an alcoholic), but might indicate that she is having an esophagus problem caused by a too tight band or something else (as alcohol would burn on something that is sore...and yes, the higher the alcohol content the more it would burn) and you might suggest she gets this checked out before it gets worse. A simple scoping should be able to tell.

My doc allows alcohol and even carbonated drinks (yes, like beer) after about the two month healing period (and I've had plenty of both...in moderation). Alcohol goes right through the band the same as any other liquid. You do need to realize that these are 'empty calories', don't drink with meals, moderation...yadda yadda. It will slow your weight loss the same as eating something high calorie.

Best Wishes! -BG

Default I agree

It sounds like your mom has some damage from acid reflux. they can give her pills for that.

I am in my 8th week postop LB and I can drink wine with no problem. I do not get drunker quicker like the doctor suggested might happen. I was told to stay away from beer and any carbonated beverages for a year because the carbonation might expand my baby stomach. From what I have read, I think the problem with alcohol seems to be the empty calories. Everyone is different...

Yeah, I think this is her thinking as well. I also think she may be too tight because there are so many things she says she can't eat anymore. But, she also says she is happy with where she is at so I haven't said anything. I figure its not really my place to say. But, since I'm planning on getting the band now too, I was just curious if my wine days are over. Darn it, I wish wine was calorie-free! LOL

If she's too tight, it IS your place to say so. Damage to the esophogus can become so bad that they cannot correct it. Another thing, if her band is too tight for too long, it can erode into her stomach. If she can get in 64 ozs of water a day, 60 ozs of protein a day, and around 700-800 cals, then that's fine, but if she can't get that in, she needs to let them take out just a tiny bit. Without proper aftercare, the band can become your worse nightmare. I know that first hand.
