At 16, I was valedictorian, skipping grades, graduating early, and going off to college. I was 260 lbs and very much an overachiever. I would've qualified for RNY. I would have done it too, and it would have been a big mistake.
I was a very mature 16 year old, but I know for a fact I would not have been able to handle WLS. All those vitamins and meal plans and followup appointments? All I wanted to do was go to class and then come home/back to the dorm and goof off with my friends, go to parties, and be a kid! I believe that the only surgery you may able to handle at 16 years old is the lapband surgery and guess what, in my opinion the lapband SUCKS and within a few years you'll have to have it removed.
I'll tell you what I honestly think, and this is coming from a lifetime of being fat so I know what you're going through. Spend the next 4 years working on portion control, enjoying high school and college, and going to the gym and learning about your body. Document your experience with your PCP and keep a journal.
If at 20, you still feel that you need WLS, have RNY or the sleeve. It will most likely help with your diabetes. That's my honest opinion for you. I hope you take my advice Breanna. At 16, I thought I knew it all, but I didn't have a clue. I wish you the best of luck.
