Bariatric Surgery Center of Idaho
Idaho Center for Weight Loss Surgery
Google is a wonderful thing!!
Just a suggestion... if you seriously want to go through with all this you should probably do all the research that you can like the rest of us did. Most of the time your family doctor will recommend that you go to a specific practice, check into it.

I looked at the links Alexis posted, and while it doesn't say whether or not they do surgery on teens, it is worth calling them. However, both said they require that you have tried other methods to lose weight first, such as a medically supervised diet. Have you done that? One also says they require a history of obesity, and I don't know if you have much of a history of it at just 16.

If she is 144 lbs over weight then there has to be some kind of history.
I saw a true life on MTV where a highschool kid got GBS. So its out there, but not sure where he was. I would suggest talking to your regular doc about gettin into a program or have your parents call their insurance carrier and ask them directly. Good luck I hope that you get the help you need. I was VERY obese all thru highschool and even before, so I know the hell that you live in everyday.

I encourage you to talk to your parents and all of you search and learn the ins and outs of wls then find out what insurance covers and what docs. Go from there. I understand being young and obese, it is heartbreaking. But being mature enough to make this decision at your age may not be there yet.
Good luck hun. Hope everything works out for you.

Breanna,
As I see from what you posted your probably qualify just based on your weight... you will probably have some great obstacles to tackle ..like mentioned of a doctors supervised diet.. I have the lapband so I know kinda what you will go through....
My first suggestion if you havent already done this is go see your primary doctor- get weighed in and checked over and start on a diet..talk it over with this doctor and ask them for a referral to a surgeon...and keep following up with the doctor every month for a weigh in and check up- that way if they do require a diet you already have it started and join a gym- the Y or something to get started- you will need this anyway for after surgery...but you gotta start somewhere hun...
good luck finding someone and until then start prepping yourself for it- follow a restricted diet as best you can- stop ALL soda consumption now and cut back on your pasta, rice ect.. maybe only 1 time a week.

Wow.......is all I have to say. If your oncologist thinks that it would benefit you then I am sure he could find someone that is willing to do the surgery. Otherwise you need to join a gym or the ymca and try that. There is no way I was mentally prepared to have wls at the age of 16. Hell I am doing good to handle it at the age of 34. Good luck!

OK, I was googling teens and weight loss surgery, and found something that said the lap band has not been approved by the FDA for use in teens and that for this reason, could not be used in teens.

Me again. Apparently they do lap band on teens at Children's Hospital in Cincinnati. Weight Management and Obesity Specialists for Kids / Teens, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. I still don't think it's actually approved for use in teens, though. I think they're just using it on teens anyway. Kinda like many prescription medications are only FDA approved for use in adults, but doctors prescribe them for children anyway.
