Default pre op diet

Does anyone know why I have to be on clear liquids for my pre op diet? The nurse said I need to stay away from red and purple dies. I am confused.

You should have asked for an explanation right then and there. How long do you have to be on clear liquids? The 7 days leading up to my surgery got more and more restricted...but every surgeon is different.

Clear liquid diets let the stomach and intestines work minimaly to break down and digest foods. It is the diet of choice for patients with stomach and digestive tract issues.

The reason for no red/purple dyes is that they are hard to differenciate from blood. When looking at the body internaly through scopes, xrays, or upon excretion i.e. vomiting, and bodily fluids.

Ask your Dr. for a clarification as to what "clear" liquids you will be able to drink and good luck

Thanks for your help. I start my diet tomorrow. My surgery is Aug 3rd. I hope I survive the pre op diet.

I would call their office and get to the bottom of it. My diet was complete clear liquids with 3 protein shakes a day. It was hell, but I made it. Hopefully you can get to the bottom of it. Good luck.

I just noticed that you would be post-op now. How are you doing? I am going to assume your dr was either Cottam or Richards since you are military in Utah. I had Dr Cottam and was very pleased with him. Good luck getting through the next few weeks.

Hope you're doing well! I didn't have a pre-op diet for LB surgery at all. I have had to do the 'no red/purple' before a colonoscopy though...as they said, so if they need to look internally that it won't look like something it's not. Good luck with your recovery.

I am doing very well today. Monday was my surgery with Dr Cottam. Tues and Wed I pretty much slept the whole day and today I feel great. I am still a little tired though. Thanks for asking. I sure am glad it is over and done.
