Question Tips and Tricks for pre-op diet?

Hello all!

This is my first post. I just received my surgery date 8/10. I am scrambling around trying to find a good routine for preop diet! Anyone out there have a formula that worked especially well for them? What is the best protien power, liquid, shake etc.? I hope I can make this work. I have arthritis in my knees due to all of this weight, and I am counting on this to get my life back!

Thanks Guys!

Julie

Julie - in theory, your surgeon/NUT should provide you with information on a pre-op diet. Ask about it at your next visit.

Some surgeons (like mine) did not require a liquid diet. I was just required to lose 10-15lb and have a low fat diet. Ultimately I lost 35lb so I must have done something right.

The norm seems to be 800 to 1200 calories per day, 70-100 grams of protein and a lower intake of carbs and fats.

Until you know what your surgeon requires, I wouldn't rush out for protein supplements at this stage.

But when you do need them - I'd recommend you get a selection of sample sized baggies cause trust me - protein supplements are very much a personal choice and you can't guarantee on like the same stuff post-op as you did pre-op.

Best selection I know of is from vitalady and all their products are of high quality and suitable for us: Vitalady.com - Protein Supplements, Vitamins & Minerals, and Safe Snacks!

Syntrax Nectar is good stuff and the good thing is that they do a range of fruity stuff and some milk shake ones too (I like the milk shake ones best).

I didn't have a strict pre-op diet for the band either (and neither did the GB patients at my docs office)...my doc said he's never had anyone's large liver get in the way of him doing the surgeries. They did ask us to cut back on the calories and eat low fat/sugar the week before, but nothing specific. I never had/have to drink a protein shake EVER, but I did try a few of these pre-op as I wanted to try them and I still do a few after fills, but that's my choice. I found the Atkins and EAS low carb ones that are premade are fine (I got chocolate, available at WalMart and Target)...hated any in a metal can. I also bought a container of the Isopure mix at GNC, but it's only tolerable with lots of frozen fruit and milk. Unless your doc requires protein shakes I wouldn't bother with this as it will take me a year to go through the container as it's something we banders don't use...actually a no-no on the lifetime diet as it's a slider food. Good luck to you! -BG

Congrats on your surgery date, THAT IS MY birthday, so what a FAB date!!! The liquid diet I am doing is Optifast which is quite expensive however heres some cheaper brands and they taste good too. Plus you can get samples.

Default Pre-op Diet

My surgeon requires liquids, 2 protein shakes a day, mostly vegetables, a 4 oz
lean protein per day. I have found that I can fill up on raw cauliflower dipped in the Walden Farms Honey Mustard dressing. I gagged down a light muscle milk drink (strawberries and cream) for breakfast. I don't think I'll try that one again - it was horrible.

3 days down and 7 to go til surgery.
