Default Doc says no GBS. Lapband only.

Saw Dr. Callery on the 22nd of October and because of my advanced lung disease, he feels that I am not a good candidate for Gastric Bypass. So we are moving ahead with the LapBand surgery. I read and read about GBS and felt like I was ready for that so I am trying to play catch up with the LapBand. Any tips or pointers from any of you?

Thanks,
Christie

I'm sorry you're not able to get the surgery of your choice. But, I'd definitely listen to Dr. C. You're lucky he caught that possible contraindication! I'd be very thankful.

I actually sold that book on LBT. Thanks for the "plug" though!

Dr Callery is an amazing surgeon who cares for the well-being of his patients. If he recommends lap band, I would go with his recommendation. He would rather save your life than go with a procedure that may cause you any harm.

Christie,

So glad to see that you decided to post again. Was thinking about you lately. So gastric bypass isn't what Dr. C thinks is good for you but at least you have the lapband option. Great!!!!!

I know your desire to live and lose weight is very strong and you will do well with the lapband.

I'm happy for you!

God Bless!

Default Bands rock!

Hi Christie,

15 months in, I can say I really do love my band and wouldn't trade it for anything! I'm REALLY overdue for an adjustment (haven't been able to get in with a new bariatric doctor since I moved in April), but I do still have restriction and it has helped me keep pretty close to my low weight (around 75 lbs below my all-time high), and I have every faith that I'll be right back in the swing once I get a small fill and a good talking to by the nutritionist and doctor!

I'm hoping to be one of Dr. Callery's patients very soon (I'm waiting for a referral from my primary doc). I'm glad to hear so many great things about him and can't wait to get rolling again!

Have faith that this WILL help you to improve your health and is very much worth it! Good luck!

i too had to change from gbp to the band. I have done nothing but searched on the bypass, my surgery is set for the 28th, but because of my age(59), heart issues, my dr feels lapband is safer. He said, he would get me through the surgery (bypass) but there are like 13 places that get stappled, and if one of those leaked after , then i would not survive. So we are going lap. I am somewhat dissapointed, but still happy i will be getting healthy.

Best of luck to you

Lapbandtalk.com is a great website. I haven't fully decided on which surgery to do I will make up my mind when I see the surgeon on the 27th. So I am on both sites and love them both. Godd Luck...

Default no GBS, Lapband only

Hi, sorry to hear some of you are being led on a path that isn't your preference. For what it's worth, there are some real advantages with a band. The risks of complications and mortality ARE significantly lower, and although your weight loss might be slower initially, their 5 year average are pretty much the same weight loss (because bandsters DO lose, even if it may be a little slower). You'll also have a faster recovery and won't have to worry as much about malnutrition/malabsorption.

Contrary to what you hear, you WILL have restriction, and there will be foods you can no longer eat. I can attest it DOES work!

If you have specific questions about the band, let me know - I'm happy to respond.
