Default anyone got approved by insurance who is on the low end of BMI criteria?

Left my doctor's office today feeling very discouraged. He said he will do the lapband, but it will have to be self paying. He said my insurance will not approve it. Has anyone heard of getting approval when thier BMI is not 35? Mine is 33.5. I have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, gerd, bulging disc in my back, and COPD. Seems to me I have the co morbidies. I live in San Diego and have Pacificare insurance. Any feedback would be greatly appreciatied.

Is he willing to submit the request to the insurance company to see if they will, given your co-morbidities? I would think if he's not even willing to do that, then you might want to consult another surgeon to get a second opinion.

Good luck.

I second that motion. I would check on another surgeon. If you get the same response then there it is, but I would check with another first before giving up.

My suggestion? Gain a few pounds or put weights in your bra and go back. If I were that close to 35 with all those co morbidities I wouldn't put out all that money when insurance would pay. JMHO

nicole has a good suggestion. I agree you have too many comorbitiies and you know what the surgeon office cant make the decision on weather you have to self pay or use insurance thats not right so i would have your pcp submit for approval and see what your insurance says
