Just another book you may want to recommend to your friend. It is an easy read that really tells it like it is. I read it before surgery and it helped me so much! It really helped me understand what to expect after my surgery.

It is "The Real Skinny on Weight Loss Surgery" by Julie Janeway and Karen Sparks. You can find it on Amazon.

I was all that and more. I ate a lot. My health was really bad, and I felt like all I could control was what I put into my mouth. So I ate. It was my one thing I could do. Once I realized that I could maybe improve my health by removing the weight I refocused. I was only allowed to get the band. (Bad heart) so I changed, ate not for what I couldn't do, but I started to eat after so I could hopefully someday do things again. I started at 330, and today 16m. later I am 208. (I'm 5'5") So I have a ways to go, but its coming off. Someday I will get there. Once you make up your mind you can do it. Even with RNY, it isn't a for sure thing she will make goal with out changing her habits. My friend had RNY the same day I had the band but she eats cookies, muffins, and well crap, and hardly any protein. I tell you this because she didn't change her habits, and hasn't gotten to goal. She isn't complaint at all. I watch everything I eat, and am compliant, and have lost more weight then her...So if you friend is willing to commit, then its possible, if not then I don't suggest she gets either surgery!!!

PS I am not suggesting at all that any other RNY patient is like the friend, but I used her as a example to show you it can be done, even with rny.

It doesn't sound as though Amy is ready for something as drastic as surgery. Many of us have had to hit rock bottom in order to consider this surgery, because discipline is required. If you can't commit to it, you'll be sick, have complications, etc. Additionally, her lack of commitment is obvious since she asked someone else to look up the information for her. I'm sure you mean well, but your actions enable her to continue doing what she's always done. I'm sure it's difficult to "help" but no one should be in the position of being someone else's "food conscience." If Amy is unwilling to make these decisions independently, then she will be miserable post-operative.

Amy should be investigating this information herself, and she should be absolutely ready to make a commitment to doing something this drastic. When SHE'S ready...we'll be here for her. Otherwise, you should tell her that this is HER journey, one that you will support, but you cannot do it for her. It's time to step back and let Amy take control.

-Mike

I agree completely with Mike. Sometimes I will eat something I shouldnt have, usually happens once every couple months, but I pay for it painfully. Kinda like touching a hot stove, after a couple of mess up's I find it easier to to stay away.

She is a wonderful person who deserves to be free of this weight burden.

Current weight 320 at 6'3" goal weight probably 185 to 200

She lacks discipline in general. She refuses to excercise unless we are talking about walking around Disneyland. She continually makes poor food choices and counts on me to be the food police. She gets anxiety when the house has no snacks. She works 12-16 hours a day and gets almost every meal from a caterer buffet line or snack table. She is almost always tired and achy. She can't maintain a strict diet for more than 3 weeks...her last attempt, Medifast on and off for 2mos... If there is an opportunity to overeat then she will...especially if I'm not around to be her food conscious.
She typically eats without thinking much about it and constantly feels hungry...
thanks for any input....She has asked me to research this for her so please help
Alot of the things mentioned here pose many red flags.

#1 "She lacks discipline in general": If this is true, then by this very statement alone, the Lap-Band is NOT the choice for your friend. With the Lap-Band, you have to really be disciplined the majority of the time, at least 95% of the time, make proper food choices, you must stay with a good exercise routine and you have to be able to curb the desire to "snack".

The band is only used as a tool to curb real hunger, not head hunger and it will allow the user to get full fast and stay satiated between meals. That is all. Please note, you can cheat the band very easily. If she likes carb snacks, the band WILL NOT prevent you from eating them. You can still eat potato or corn chips, crackers, milk-shakes, ice-cream -- I mean, you name it! You can eat these, no problem...

#2: "She refuses to excercise unless...": Another problem. You STILL have to exercise to lose or maintain your weight. She might find it easy to lose at first because the portions will greatly decrease, but overall - there is no way around this. In fact, I don't know of any surgeries that you can forego this. It is a fact of life, our bodies need exercise just as much as it needs good nutrition.

#3: "She makes poor food choices": Please see the answer to #1. You can STILL make poor food choices with the band. The band will not recover her from this.

This question would be better posed between herself and a surgeon who does Lap-Bands, but I'm going to go out on a limb here and say I don't think a Lap-Band would help your friend very much. Not unless she really is willing to go through a major life change which includes, eating much less, staying away from snacks (most of the time), exercising on a regular basis, etc.
