Default Bariatric follow up survey....

I may have mentioned this before but I'mpart of a study being done by BC/BS insrunce where they follow post GBS paitents for 3 years to track the benefits/risks of WLS. It's been interesting and I tlak to a RN once a month.

Due to my complication they also added me to a follow up program with a nutritionist. She calls twice a month and goes over things with me...anyway the point of my long story...lol

She notified me yesterday of the change in the recommend guidlines for calciumintake in GBS paitents. It has been raised from 1200 a day to 1500 and also Vitamin D to 800 from what I don't remember...

Anyway. ther eyou go! discuss it with your doc and check out the new guidlines to make sure you are gettign enough. Also a reminder not to take your calcium within 2 hours of your multi-vitamin. The calcium inhibits the absorbtion of the multi and since we all have absorbtion issues as it is... yeah.

Just lettign you know!

I take a liquid calcium/magnesium supplement. It's kind of citrus flavored and goes down very easily.

Here's a link to it. http://http://www.mothernature.com/s....cfm/sku/40371

I'm on 3 x 500mg of calcium citrate - Citracal Creamy Bites. They come in chocolate, caramel and lemon.

You can get the chocolate ones from Walmart most of the time but they do tend to sell out pretty quick. I use drugstore.com http://www.drugstore.com/templates/b...param=citracal

Paige - thank you for the update.

Default Apparently all calicum is not created equal:eek:

There is a difference in the type of calcium you take...

There is calcium citrate and calcium carbonate. I know different surgeons have different opinons on this...some say take tums but the last 3 surgeons I spoke with and the nutritionist said it's very important to take calcium citrate.... not calcium carbonate.

Theres a very detailed explination that all boils down to absorbtion properties. So I loved taking those vitachew ones mentioned above but unfortunately they are calcium carbonate....

it's difficult to know which is the "best" advice so I usually differ to what my personal surgeon suggested or if I take the time ot do massive research online I may do soemthing different..

All i know is that calcium is IMPORTANT so don't mess aroudn by not taking it...

Paige - the Citracal chews I mentioned are calcium citrate (with Vit.D) - not carbonate: http://www.citracal.com/Product/Creamy-Bites.aspx

I think you're referring to the Viactiv chews. They are carbonate.

And for those new members - although calcium carbonate has a higher concentration of calcium, it's relatively insoluble as it requires an acidic stomach which is bypassed in us.

Calcium citrate is more soluable and it doesn't rely on gastric acid for absorption.

Also, this is an important bit of info on calcium that Beth posted a few days ago:

Quote:
Basicly the "rules" about Calcium are that it should be Calcium citrate w/ Vitamin D. The Vit. D helps with the absorption. You should wait at least an hour after taking your multivitamin if it contains iron. It should also be taken with some kind of food plus we can't absorb more than 600mg at one time so you have to divide your 1200 mg dose over two doses. I also read another article recently about making sure it is 1200mg of elemental Calcium citrate. I'll see if I can find it and post it. It had a good explaination of what to look for on the labels.
And if you follow the link that Toony posted above, it'll take you to the information on calcium and labels that Beth mentions.
