Smile Does anyone else suffer from this?

Thumping heartbeat all times of the day and night?

Since having the op it has got far worse it is there first thing in the morning and when I go to bed at night even If I am reading my book it is awful. My diet is so little and healthy now and even with the weight loss this sensation has not gone.

It is sometimes coming when I am driving or even walking round the shops so I am wondering if it is something I am still eating

Any advice please

The other question is about the port on does anyone else have a problem with it hurting when they lay on their side. Sometimes I wake up in the night and have to move because I can feel the port againt my rib.

Smile NO one has replied to this?

Does NO One else suffer from this?

I have been awake all night with this last night so I really thought it must be something to do with the operation even though I had it before I had the band fitted.

I'm a newbie (less than 3 weeks out), but my heart races sometimes too. If it troubles you that much I think you should go see your doctor ASAP. I'm not a medical professional, but it wouldn't hurt to get it checked out. =0)

Dianne... you should call your doctor... surgeon or your primary care physican. It could be panic attacks (I've had them)... or something more serious... please call a doctor!!!

I agree with Katie...go see the doctor. I used to have awful rapid heartbeat episodes. (AKA tachycardia) I ended up wearing a halter monitor and having stress tests and EKG's...all of which pointed to absolutely nothing! I continued to suffer from it for a couple of years until my doctor just happened to make the connection that I was taking one of my asthma inhalers too close to bedtime. I now take it in the afternoon and have had no more problems!

It could be psychosomatic, but there also may be something easy that your doctor can recognize and remedy.

You could also try some relaxation techniques to lower your blood pressure and heart rate:

1. Sit in a comfortable chair and close your eyes. Start with your feet and work your way up through every muscle group in your body, particularly fingers, toes, and face. Scrunch (contract) everything up for a moment, then release.
2. Alpha Breathing: Breath in for four counts, hold for four counts, breath out for four counts, hold for four counts, then repeat until you feel your heart rate come down.
3. Catch some Zzzzz's! (Not with sleeping) This is a meditative exercise where you sit in a comfortable chair and say words that start with "Z". Words like "Zipper," "Zephyr," or "Zen" will do fine. Say the words slowly and draw them out over several seconds. Close your eyes and concentrate on how slowly you can say those words and make the sounds of the words vibrate in your mouth.
4. (From the book You: The Owner's Manual): In a comfortable chair, close your eyes and imagine yourself on vacation somewhere. (They used Hawaii in their example) Imagine the fun things you are doing and the people you want to be with. Let your mind wander around and experience this "virtual" field trip.
5. You could also try the following scents: Lavender, Orange, or Vanilla. All of these are Brain Relaxing scents and help the brain to regulate blood pressure and heart rate. It helps some people more than others, but its worth a shot. Additionally, you can use those flavors, particularly vanilla and orange in candy (sugar free, of course) or in hot drinks to have the same effect.

These are all of the relaxation techniques that I teach the kids at school to help them get into what I call a "zone for learning." They can also use these for test or homework anxiety and I know they work for the kids...they work for me as well, but they have to be practiced to have the greatest effect.

Hope this helps!

-Mike

Thumbs down Been to drs

I was shocked that he first thought it could be in my mind then I started to believe him ...... then he checked my blood pressure it was sky high and also my heart was running to fast he said.

I have had an ECG and that was normal then had am echo of the heart and it seems my hole in the heart is bigger than 2 years ago so not sure what will happen now? I think maybe it is the increase in my walking I am now doing over 10000 steps a day and before I was doing nothing really.

The Dr thought the weight loss was slow???? I have lost nearly 3 stone in since August 25th 2007 so I was shocked he has advised to me try and loose it faster that will help with my blood pressure? I hardly eat anything and am starting to feel tired all the time. I am now Very confused and wonder why I bothered to go to Drs at all.

I am now waiting to be referred to a heart Dr for further tests but in the mean time will carry on as I am to keep the weight loss going.

I wonder sometimes why we bother to try help oursleves when the Drs seem useless an unsupportive towards over weight people.

Hey sweetie... I'm glad you had it checked out and that you'll be seeing another specialist soon... Can't have you stroking out on us! If your Dr. didn't think you're losing weight fast enough... kick him! Was he your weight loss surgery doc or just a family doctor? I don't think the general Medical World understands weight loss surgery... Just take care and don't overdo until you see the heart dr... I'm really worried about you!

Smile Thank you

I think my Dr is against this op he is my Gp and thinks this is the easy way out can your BELIEVE THAT .......

I will be going back to Birmingham for my review on wednesday and see what they have to say about all of this. I was born with this hole in the heart and for 48 years has never been a problem but now there are more than one holes and they seem to be a problem. Amazing that we gain all that weight and when we start loosing it we get other health problems? When I was 18st I had this trouble though went to my Gp he told me it was acid and because I was so obese that was the reason maybe it was not and he over looked it my mistake?

The card sale went okay could have sold more cards though last year I sold 200 this year only 127? I did sell alot of craft items though so that made up for that in a way.

Thank you gwen for your concern I am feeling better today and will just do what I can but am still striving to do my 10000 stepa a day as no one has told me I cant so must be okay still.

take care Dianne

Dianne,

I'm glad to hear that you will be getting into a heart specialist. Are you on any heart meds? If you are on meds are any of them fat soluable meds? A pharmacist would be able to tell you that. Some medication dosages need to be adjusted as we lose weight. The amount of fat in our bodies will effect how some meds are absorbed. Some of the fast heart rate may indicate that you need some meds readjusted. I know for myself my heart rate got REALLY slow. One day I checked it and it was 38!!! No wonder I was feeling weak and dizzy there for awhile. So anyway, make sure you discuss your medications with the heart doctor. Did you GP check any of your labs? I know with the band you don't run the risk of having your labs messed up quite as much as a person that had the RNY but they still need to be watched. Certain labs that come to mind would be your magnesium and potassium. If those are off it could effect your heart rate.

Please don't push yourself to lose faster than what you are. Your body will lose at the rate it wants to. It is different for everyone. You are doing fantastic so I would certainly close my ears to that doctor's suggestion.
