I, too, started out years ago, thinking I would do the lap band - and read and read and talked to people (the main surgeon at my place has the LAP and he was one of the doctors who got it FDA approved)... it's really subjective - it depends on your weight, your relationship with food, how much you want to lose and other options like the surgical questions mentioned earlier - either way, you're going under anesthesia, by the way.
A friend of mine had LAP a month before Katrina (August 2005) and I was supposed go for my RNY a couple days after the storm, but obviously had to wait - it was a year ago today that I had my surgery... she lost probably 40 pounds in that time span, and she's a big girl... large frame, lots of weight to lose. She looks better, but eats around it all the time. I think she has regrets, but is not one to say she was wrong. If it works for her, I am glad for that... I have seen her eating at functions recently, and it's not good.
You can drink milkshakes, hig fat anything and if you chew everything well, it will all go down with the band. Not happening with WLS, and for most of us here, we
need the restriction of portion, malabsorption, and possibility of dumping. It works for me. Good luck on your decision - whatever it is, it should be right for your life.
