Default Denied!

And believe it or not, I am sort of relieved. Not because I don't want to have the surgery but because I know where I stand now. I was denied because I don't have a documented 6 month weight loss in the last 3 years. I did Phen-Fen but it was 7 years ago.

If I do the 6 months can they denie me for another reason?

What are my chances of not doing a 6 month plan and getting it overturned?

So what should I do?

Who should I write or get to write letters on my behalf? Do I write personal letter or a business type facts only letter?

It also says: instead of the sevice requested that they (Sharp HMO) recommend I self refer to a dietician or weight loss program they offer.........what do you all think about that?

What are my chances of getting this overturned? I have Sharp HMO with Sharp Comunity Medical Group.

I have my boxing gloves on so point me in the right direction cause i'm in for a KO Here is a copy of my diet history that I believe was submitted with the request for referral.

To whom it may concern,

My first recollection of being thrilled about weight loss was when I was 4. I got sick with Salmonella food poisoning and became quiet ill and was hospitalized. I was in the hospital on IV only with no food intake until the end of my stay when I was allowed liquid gelatin. I remember coming home and my Mother was concerned with the amount of weight I had lost during my hospital stay but what I remember feeling was pride. I had gotten more compliments on how I looked coming out of the hospital that I could recall my entire life before that. I can’t dredge up any memory of not being over weight. I was always chubby, pudgy or just plain old fat. I have documented to the best of my knowledge my life in the weight loss trap. Although I have always tried to maintain a healthy eating pattern my weight has always been an issue ……here documents my many years of yo-yo’s.

1987-88 Age 9 began seeing a nutritionalist from Jordan Hospital in Plymouth MA. Learned a lot about carbs, fats and their different calorie contents and the sort. No weight loss resulted.

1989 Age 11 Had thyroid tested and the results were normal. (Dr. Daniel Strub)

1989-90 Age 11-12 I participated in the Jenny Craig Weight loss Program. Weighed in at 200lbs and lost approximately 40 before going on maintenance. The weight steady crept back as soon as I was no longer eating their packaged food.

1992-1993 Age 15 I Started my first round of physical therapy for lower back pain. During the initial session and all subsequent ones I was told that loosing weight would help my overall back health and tighter stomach muscles would help my backs stability.

1991-1994 High school. During high school I did all kinds of over the counter products for weight loss. I used Dexatrim, and caffeine tablets, natural teas and liquid diets. I did the cabbage soup diet, the banana and egg diet, you name it-I tried it. I managed to loose weight initially with all of these fads and supplements. I gained approximately 15 lbs throughout highschool.

1997 Age 20 Was on the prescription drug Phen Fen for approximately 6 months and lost about 30 lbs. The drug was pulled. Again all weight was regained plus more. (Dr. Daniel Strub in Poway CA))

1999 Feb Age 21 I started taking Metabolife and started a modified low carb diet. I lost about 20-25 lbs. I continued until June 1999

1999 August Age 22 Started my second round of physical therapy for lower back pain. Again weight loss was stressed and I had managed to keep off about 15lbs of the weight I had lost earlier in the year but I found out I was pregnant with my second child during the treatment course and weight loss took a back burner.

2000 (fall) Age 23 Started taking the available Phen/Fen (?) from a diet clinic in Poway, CA. Continued for approximately 3 months with no weight loss.

2002 (Dec) After routine blood work was done I found out my triglycerides were 383 and I was put on a cholesterol lowering diet. A family member had successfully lowered their cholesterol by starting the Suzanne Somers eating plan so I decided to try that in hopes of loosing weight and lowering my cholesterol.

2002-2003 (Dec-Jan) Age 24 Started the Suzanne Somers diet and lost 12lbs the first month. When the weight loss stopped after the first month I started Weight watchers.

2003 (Jan-Mar) Age 26 Joined Weight Watchers Online. I kept the 12 lbs off I had lost from The SS diet and lost about 3lbs more before finding out I was pregnant. WW doesn’t have a pregnancy program so I stopped.

2003 (March) My blood work was redone and I had dropped my triglycerides to 293, almost 100 points, but not nearly below the 150 where they should be.

2004 (Feb-Sept) Age 27 Rejoined Weight Watchers Online. I lost an initial 20 lbs and plateaued for about a month then lost another 3-4. During the 6 months I really fluxuated: gained and lost but wasn’t been able at all to drop below the 24 lbs I lost initially.

2004 (Sept) I started a Slim Fast plan but found out I am lactose intolerant. I haven’t ever been a large milk drinker so the amount of milk required per day in shakes caused severe stomach upset. I stopped after 1 ½ weeks.

I started gymnastics at 2.5 and added ice skating at 4. I studied tap, jazz and ballet as a child for approximately 5 years and I played on a soccer team. In middle school I took Jazzercize classes with friends and my mother. In high school I played softball and volleyball and participated in dance, I belonged to Family Fitness and took step aerobic classes and weight trained 4-5 days a week before and after my back rehabilitation. After highschool I took up rollerblading and hiking. Up until my most recent back pain incident I rollerbladed 3 miles 5-6 days a week and walked 2.75 (or more) miles 4-5 days a week. I have started walking again (2.75 miles 3X’s a week) and joined a gym for strength training.

Please help me, I would like to take the next step as soon as possible?

Default Queen B,

Appeal the process. Get a doctor to write a letter for you and write one of your own. I'll send you the link to an appeal letter that you can add to or modify to fit your situation. I've heard that WLS will be harder and harder to get in the future because insurance company's are denying the claims due to cost/risk. We've all done the cost benefit analysis on this one. We all know that reducing/eliminating the comorbidities associated with morbid obesity makes for a healthier person in the very near future. It's worth the fight! You are worth the fight!

Exclamation 6 Month Supervised Diet

First, I'm sorry you were denied...I was denied twice. As far as I can tell, and most people here will tell you, that you will need a current supervised weight loss program under your belt, but it can't hurt trying to appeal it without the "program".

I suggest you ask the insurance company if their dietician or weight loss program counts as the "supervised" one. If they say yes, get into it or see the dietician immediately. Do your 6 months, and ask for the surgery again.

Keep up on the insurance company never the less though...they will make you jump through all kinds of hoops and practically beg, but if this is something you really, really want, it's definitely worth doing. It may seem overwhelming and exhausting, but so worth it. I don't want to deter you, but it took me 2 years to get approved, but I finally did. Everyone is here to support you...march on.

QueenB,
I too have Sharp (SCMG) insurance. My PCP was familiar with what was required for WLS and we started documenting my weight loss attempt before the insurance was contacted. I was approved quickly when she submitted the referral request and then again when Dr C's ofc submitted the request for surgery. I wish you the best of luck with your appeal.

My doctor wouldn't refer me until I completed the six months of necessary weight loss, which I am still doing, I see her every month. I threw in the towel this month and revisited Jenny Craig so that I know that I am eating exactly 2000 calories per day as recommended by the doctor. And, making every attempt at the end of my 12 hour days to be getting some type of activity in. It is expensive but I really want a valid attempt at this. To show that I am trying. Besides I have got to make the most out of the lifetime membership hopefully I won't be needing it much longer. There seems to be several road blocks in getting approved for the surgery. But, like most things in life nothing truly comes easy. Don't get discouraged. Six months may feel like an eternity but it is just around the next corner......

By the way, who is your insurance carrier?

I have exactly the same insurance as you. I refused to put myself through another unsucessful diet! My Dr. is the bomb! I joined the Y and exercised 5 times a week for 9 mos. Lost 60lbs. Started having female problems and had to stop the exercise (for obvious reasons). After a couple of months, I started gaining again. My Dr. re-submitted the request stating that she had "supervised" my weight loss for the past several months, and within 1 week, I was approved for a consult. I was NOT going to pay for another over-stated diet plan and that was that. She totally understood and worked with me. I don't know who your PCP is, but mine wanted the surgery before I did! Good Luck! (try to be patient, you need the time anyway to be sure in your heart and mind that this IS for you)

Default Don't give up

I read what you wrote and I don't understand why you were denied. I started taking Pfen-Pfen in June 1996 until July 1997 and it was 7 years before too. I went to Sharp Rees Stealy Medical group and My doctor's name is Nancy W. Chang. She is great and very supportive for WLS. She filled out the referal and I was approved immediately to go see Dr. Callery. I took her my copies of my medical records showing I had done Phen-Phen and Weight Watchers. I had broken my leg in 1993 and had knee damage from it and my obesity was causing problems for my leg. Now whether that was a condition that caused me to get refered to Dr. Callery or not I am not sure. But, you have documented back problems that the weight has caused problems, so I can't see why you wouldn't get the referal.
I may have missed this in what I read, but did you get the referal from your primary doctor and then saw Dr. Callery or Dr. Potts and went through all the tests and then was denied? Or were you denied the referal to see Dr. Callery?
I wish you well and hope you get your approval for the surgery. Keep us informed.
