Craving Salt
I have been craving salt ever since I had surgery. As most of you may know, my levels of everything have been very low. I have been thinking about salt a lot. Prior to surgery, I was a sugar addict. I had to have everything sweet, you name it, I had it in my kitchen cupboards. I could easily pass up any salty snacks and never salted my food. Now, I find myself salting foods that are already salty and the other day, I wanted to eat salt plain! I know that sounds gross, but I figured I need to address the reason why I need so much salt. My sister says it is kind of like pregnant women who crave salt and move onto eating clay and dirt. She has a friend who had wls who chews on clay. Now to me, that is a problem. I have no desire to chew on clay or eat dirt, but this salt craving is getting out of had. Just the other day, I was licking salt off of tortilla chips. Enough rambling, sorrry.
Have any of you craved salt this badly? Thanks for listening.

Salt
Dale,
I have craved salt since 3 months out. I am now at 14 months and still crave it from time to time. Kelly told me not to worry about it as long as I did not go overboard.
Like you, I did not want to eat so I would suck the salt off of peanuts. Sometimes our bodies know what we need.
The pits was retaining water AND craving salt. It all worked out and I have the salt cravings alot less and they are satisfied easier.

Salt...
Hi Dale,
I'm so sorry that you have been going through so many nutritional issues.
I have also craved salt. What I have found helpful more recently, is sunflower seeds in the shell. You get the salt from the shell and the protein from the nut. I don't eat many at a time...maybe 10 and that has seemed to help. I did also have one green olive last night. It was only 7 calories and no fat.
I hope you feel better. Make sure you're taking all of your vitamins.

Pickles
Irela,
Pickles have been my best friend because they are salty. I have been eating sunflower seeds also. It seems to help. I have been on high doses of vitamins since the beginning of my 4th week post-op per Dr. Callery's orders. I have also been on a nutritional supplement that is prescribed and loaded with extra nutrients. I just can't wait until I balance out. Good idea about the sunflower seed with the shell. Yummy...salty.

Salt cravings
Hey Dale, perhaps you could do a google searc under salt cravings and see wht it may mean biologically... just an idea. Also, my Xray came back negative... no foreign body in there, so I have no idea what is causing that pain, it must be soft tissue aches.....
I shared at the last meeting my craving.... dude I think I would much rather want salt that HORSERADISH! I have been trying my darndest to get my hands on French's mustard with horseradins in it even... Im a maniac about it.. they had it on the east coast when I went back and visited my folks... I cant find it here though... time to call in for favor and have them mail me a bottle..... I totally know what your going through sugar pea... I hope that this too shall pass.....

Salt, huh?? Wonder what that is all about, Dale? Hoepfully, like others have said, it will go away soon. And if not, there are worse things you could be craving, know what I mean? lol Get better and take care!

Humm!
Is it too bad to eat salt after surgery? Just yesterday I had some cucumber with lots of lemon & salt. It was so good, I hadn't had this in ages, it just tasted so good & fresh. And right now I'm eating some too.
I thought I was never going to be able to eat sunflower seeds or pickle again, thank you guys for sharing this cause now Im definetly going to buy me some.
I too before surgery was a salt freak, even if food had salt I wouls still add some more. If there wasn't a salt shaker around I would have a fit. Food was not the same to me. I live in the middle of taco stands in Tj and boy did I eat tacos back then. Now I can't stand them, and if I ever go with someone all I eat is the red onions w/ lemon juice & cucumbers. I'm also trying to avoid red meat (beef).
Another question I have is it ok if I eat lemon w/ salt? I just love eating that too.

salt update
I saw Kelly yesterday for my 3 month post-op visit. I asked her about craving salt and she said it is perfectly normal. She said it is the body's way of telling me I am dehydrated. She also told me that if I was a "sweet lover" prior to surgery that after it is normal to want salt. Pretty strange. So, I am eating my salty nuts and not worrying about it as much.
