Curves or L.A. Fitness...
Hi Everyone,
I am thinking about joining Curves or L.A. Fitness. There is a Curves right by my house (blocks away) and I can go after work at 3:00 and then pick up the kids. I was wondering how many of you use Curves, how many times a week you go and if you honestly think it works.
If I choose L.A. Fitness, the one in Temecula won't be finished until Sept. and will still be about 8 miles away from home. I would have to drive all the way to Murrieta (14 miles) to be able to use the pool. They have a temporary L.A. Fitness in Temecula, but it doesn't have the water aerobics that I wanted to do. Another issue regarding the water aerobics is that I don't think I have the nerve to do it alone and I can't talk my Sister into going with me.
What do you all think? Curves or L.A. Fitness???

have used both and the honest truth is join the one you will go to!
You have more options with LA fitness, thats were I got my trainer and learned about the machines an stuff.
But Curves can be good too, it is really easy to just han out and not really work at it, but like I said before if you think you will go to one more than the other than chose it!
You can always swap later!

if your going to do curves DO NOT sign for a year. get a month to month contract. you will get tired of it before the year is up.
if i remember correctly month-to-month is 10.00 more but well worth it if you get tired of it like i did.

G'morning, Cindy!
I'm a Curves girl ... and here's why. It's so darn easy. I can walk right in, hit the circle and do three rounds in less than 30 minutes. It's a good workout and there are machines that work so many different areas of your body. My mom has been going for one year. I can see so many changes in her body definition. She is petite, 5'1" and weighs around 170 pounds. She was beginning to look flabby before she joined Curves. She has really toned up her thighs and hips and the results are very noticeable. I was doing well, too, prior to surgery. Since surgery, it's hard to tell because of the loose skin that is inevitable. However, I do think it is helping me somewhat because the loose skin could be worse. Curves is probably helping me firm up more than I think. Like I said, it's just a really easy and quick workout. My Curves is less than a mile from me, which makes it easier to go for me. Give it a try and see what you think. They have options -- a year's membership with payment up front at a discounted rate, a year's membership with monthly payments, and a month-to-month membership.
I also wanted to ask how you are doing since your surgery in dealing with the mentality of your co-workers. Is that getting better? I've been thinking about you!

I don't know about LA Fitness, but I like Curves. It's very easy and quick to get in the basics. I go 3 times a week. I do notice more muscle mass and inches coming off. I guess I like it that it isn't a huge challenge, because if I miss for some reason it isn't so difficult to jump back in. But you are able to work harder and all if you reach a higher level of fitness. I like to think about it as covering the basics, then anything else I do is SF icing on the cake.

Curves is a good starting point, but i agree with the above post to do the month to month in case you become bored and want more options. I belong to Golds Gym here in LA and am stil restrictesdto walking, but love the fact that O have all of the options I have like water aerobics, lap swim, all sprts of classes, and basic machine cardio and weight training....

I agree with Rain, go to the one that you will actually use. I manage a facility that has a pool and gym, but occasionally go and use the treadmill in there on cold days, but I go to curves. They have 2 programs - a regular one and an advanced. I like the atmosphere and the resistance training - the harder you push/pull, the more resistance. It can get a little boring sometimes doing the same circle (you do it 3 times a workout)...but if there are people to talk to while doing it, its much more fun. My curves also has lots of challenges and fun boards (wednes. we roll dice to win free stuff like a t-shirt), they also change out a few pieces of equipment monthly for some variety.
I think it really depends on you and what you like to do. Do you know anyone who goes to curves? You should ask them for a few free passes to try it out. If not, go into the curves and ask for a trial week or so. I would not commit to any gym unless I was able to try it out.
Too bad we all don't live closer together...we could work out together...wouldn't that be a sight!

Curves vs LA
Cindy,
I belong to LA fitness and really like it. I would go more often if I had a workout partner...anyone in the East San Diego area interested in joining me? Maybe a month to month membership to Curves until the new LA fitness is ready then switch over so you can do water aerobics? Have fun!

I am a memeber of Golds Gym, I like the variety of a full service gym. I haven't ever been interrested in Curves, so I'm kind of bias. I think you should just join the one you are more likely to go to. If you think you will go to curves, but end up joining the other, then don't go, you aren't really benefiting from any program. It doesn't matter how you work out, just that you get that heart rate up right? What about trying a trial membership at each gym. These facilities are working so hard these days for new member, that they will usually give you a week or two trial membership. You could try them out and see which one you like more. May be you will find the drive isn't a big deal or that it is and curves is for you. Ok, I'm rambling on here, I'm sure you get the gest of what I'm saying

Thanks for everyone's advice! I joined Curves on 4/11 and have been going faithfully. As soon as L.A. Fitness opens in Temecula I think I am going to join there also so that I can do the water aerobics.
