Pre Op moment
Your description of the pre op moment, reality check, life check, acceptance of death, lament is so well done.
Nobody who has not had major surgery knows that feeling. It is the loneliest feeling in the world.
I believe it is a moment that could be used as a truth serum moment. Ask someone any question in that moment and they would tell the truth.
A friend of mine who worked in the Grand Canyon used to say that people who dont hike the Canyon are incapable of lying during the last mile of the hike up from the bottom. This kind of reminds me of that.
