Plateau? What plateau??
As some of you know I hit a plateau about three or four weeks ago. My scale was stuck at 235. I knew it would happen, and tried not to fret over it, but I did a little bit. I think it's natural. I just wanted to let everyone know that I fell off the plateau last week, and in 8 days... have dropped 11 pounds. So don't worry people!! Plateaus DO happen... and they DO end!! Did I do anything to get myself off the plateau you ask? NOPE! I continued with protein, hydration, exercise and vitamins. Don't get discouraged my fellow plateauers!!!! *smooch*

Glad you've fallen off the plateau, Robin!
Why do we plateau? Can anyone explain the physiological mechanism that causes them?

We need to realize plateaus are a typical part of the journey as the body adjusts to its new calorie intake and energy output. We know that the body re-adjusts metabolism to fight the weight loss. Scary thought huh? Your body actually does NOT want to lose weight! But it's all about history. Evolution has basically favored people who could store extra weight. The weight you were able to store saw you through long starving winters. Aside from the metabolism shift, scientists haven't fully explained this lull. It's thought that you retain more water at times during weight loss, which can make it seem as though you have not lost any weight. In the process of breaking down fat, water becomes a byproduct and some of that water often times can be accumulating. Experts say the plateau, which happens at different stages for different people, is a critical time. If you lose faith that your process isn't working, you might give up exercising or make unwise food choices. The good news is, a true plateau typically is something that can be waited out. Eventually, the scale will start its downward trend again after a few weeks.
