Talking I'm on my way

Well all...this is my first posting, but I have been reading your comments and inspirational stories since July.

The great news...my surgery date has been scheduled for October 6 and my pre-op appointment is tomorrow. I have been working towards this day since April 2004. My husband, family, friends and co-workers are very excited for me. It's almost like a dream and I have a feeling that I won't believe it's happening until I wake up from surgery.

So many people ask me if I'm nervous and all I can do is give them a huge smile and say "Not at all." I allowed myself one moment of nervousness and even fear, and found myself crying in Chris's (my husband) arms. I believe he, more than anyone else, is so excited for us. We've already stared making all kinds of plans

I am going into this next step of my life positive. I've realized, that just like an infant, I am going to have to learn new habits on how to eat and exercise. Can you imagine OPPORTUNITY we are being given?! To discard all previous bad habits and be given a second chance to be healthier and wiser. Unbelievable! I cannot wait for the next chapter of my life to begin. I only have one question....will I be able to ski in the winter? I've been known to land on my belly How about rollercoasters! OH! I CANNOT WAIT!!! I wish this happiness on all who take the steps toward health and happiness.

Default Skiing...

You should ask your doctor about skiing. If the season is anything like last season, you have the opportunity to ski up until April/May. That's 6 months, I'm sure you'll be good to go by then. I plan to ski this winter too, January. That would be 5 months out for me.

Welcome to the forum. I wish you much luck on your surgery and pray for a safe and speedy recovery.

Hey Auby,

See you on the other side!!! I am scheduled for October 5th, so I bet I will meet you in the hospital. I go for my preop today too. I am REALLY nervous, getting worse each day for some reason. At the same time, I am ready. Let's do this!

All-

Thanks for your replies. It is very encouraging.

Tricia-

Whenever I feel like I may be getting nervous, I just remember that Dr. Callery has been doing this for quite awhile and that he has great stats. At least he's not a podietrist pretending to be a gastric bypass surgeon. I feel like we are in great hands. See you on the flip side my future "loser" friend.

Aubsters,

Yes, I know he has a fantastic track record, I would not be here if he didn't. Just a little butterfly feeling right now, but that will soon pass. My best friend had his reservations against the surgery, but he and I talked the other day and he is now totally for this and will be my buddy for the surgery. My sister? Let's just say she is a nay-sayer. I really feel that she is jealous that I am having the surgery. Her doctor is totally opposed to it. I think my last email to her might sway her though, if it didn't strike a nerve with her, nothing will. My son is for the surgery, but I am not telling him that it is scheduled. Just hope he doesn't call this weekend. He is in boot camp over at Fort Knox and has enough on his mind, this he doesn't need to worry about.

See you after you wake up!! Race you down the hallways!

You're almost THERE! Let us know how your preop appointment went - we're here rooting for you! Dr. Callery - and Dr. Potts, also - are great surgeons (they BOTH worked on mine!), and you'll be in very good hands - don't worry!

It's completely normal to be a little (or even a lot) freaked at the idea of doing this surgery, but the way I look at it, if I didn't go for it, I'd probably be on the table for heart bypass surgery before long, anyhow! (Bill Clinton and I were born on the same day, same year!... so his recent experience only reinforced my decision to go forward!)

Phil,

Pre-op went good. I have gained weight since my first appointment, knew that I would as that was 6 months ago. Everything is a go for Tuesday, and I am first up that day. Hey, I couldn't think of questions to ask till I got out of there, how does disability work? Did Kelly put in for it? She said she was giving me 6 weeks. Do I need to do anything? I have sooooooo much to do before Monday night, hope I don't forget to pack!

Oh yeah, I have Dr. Callery and he is gonna try to do lap!

Wink

Tricia-

The one thing I always try to remember is that I'm doing this surgery for me, not for the approval of others (not that I've ever cared what others have thought about my physical appearance). Your sister will come around, especally when she sees and hears your happiness. She's probably more scared of your transformation than jealous. She doesn't want to lose you, the person she has known all her life. I'm going through the same thing with my best friend. Knowing how I'm going to change is making her a little uncertain.

On another note, I also gained weight! I went in feeling a little ashamed, but they never even mentioned it! I feel like I've won the lottery and that I don't have to pay taxes. I too am the first on Wednesday's agenda. I will be thinking and praying for you tomorrow. Here's to you and the first day of your new life. YEAH!

Thumbs up You're on Your Way

Aubrey:

Harry and I just got back into town. We've been gone since Thursday, so I haven't had a chance to post a response.

I'm so happy for you! As you said, all your preparation is done and you're ready to roll. Being a young, healthy woman, you're gonna get through surgery with flying colors. Wednesday will be here before you blink and then, before you know it, you'll be home again!

Congratulations on your courage to take the step for a healthier life. Don't ever look back!
