Default Totally against it....

My physical therapist is totally against me having surgery. He says he actually has patients in PT for pain from WLS. I am not discouraged but he is adamant that I am not a candidate Obviously I can't count on him for a letter of recommendation. I have had so much negative feed back that I sometimes wonder if I am wrong for wanting this. I doubt that the years and years of failed diets were enough, like maybe I wasn't trying hard enough because there are so many out there who seem to think I can just do it on my own. What have I been doing wrong and what do they know that I don't? I still haven't heard anything from my ins about the referral although my PT referral went through the day they called on Friday, how long should I wait until I call to see where things stand?

Ugh, I thought it would be such a positive step once I got a Dr. behind me but there are just as many people trying to talk me out of it than there are supporting me.

Exclamation Don't get discouraged

The way I see it, is all of us that had hang-ups and road blocks put in front of us on our way to the operating room somehow do better or I like to think so. The reason I say this is that we had to fight for our surgery and struggle to get approval. Every hang up makes us that much more determined to do good and never go back to our old selves.. not saying this is a scientific thought process I had, just sayin is all.. it's for my own benefit since I had hang ups and I like to think to myself that because of those hang ups that I will do better??

Of course anyone who has this surgery and had the courage to go through with it has all the same odds as anyone else who had it regardless of weather or not it was approved right away or not.

I have some understanding of your frustration. I had and still have some people in my life that have been less than encouraging about this process I have been through. Even some who see what I have accomplished and where it has taken me give me grief. At the end of the day, the decision about what is right for you is yours alone. If you have done the research and searched your soul then you know what you have to do.

Yes it is tough to convince the folks we need help from that we have made the best decision, there are "professionals" all over that think wls is not great or good at all, but remember that each new advancement in the science of medicine or any other science had it's nay sayers. We are all still trail blazers here and have to support each other when it is hard to find support elsewhere.

Trust your gut on this. If you meet the criteria, opinion is just that, opinion... we all have them.

This group has been here for me, and will be here for you. Keep up the fight!

Question Huh?

Why does a physical therapist have patients there for pain following WLS? That doesnt make any sense to me at all. Did he explain how and why they were brought to P.T.? That just sounds funny....

You know what I tell those lame a$$ nay sayers, for everyone, that's 1 person who has not done well, I will show you 200 who have! That usually shuts them up!

Let me know about the WLS patients in PT... thats weird.

Default Physical therapist - qualified to judge WLS?

What the heck does he know? Some people probably do have bad experiences with WLS - most don't. LOTS of people have problems from being overweight - how many of your therapist's clients are in pain from obesity????? I'd dare say more than a few!

A lot of people - and especially people who consider themselves authorities - are down on WLS, but mostly it's an ego trip for them. They pounce on the small numbers of people who have bad experiences (from doctors who shouldn't be doing the surgery in the first place) and use that as a rule to pooh-pooh the whole thing.

And a LOT of people have the attitude that fat people should "just" eat "a little less" - yeah, right.

It IS true that weight loss surgery is not the single, one thing fixes everything solution for obesity - it is only successful for those who are ALSO willing to commit to a total change of lifestyle when it comes to food and exercise.

It's true that if you make that kind of a commitment, you can lose the weight without surgery, but few of us are superhuman enough to make it without this wonderful tool to speed us on our way.

We all need to educate ourselves better on the statistics that show that WLS has a VERY good track record in helping people keep their weight down over the long term - better than just about any other way to do it - so we can counter these arguments with some realistic statements about this.

Okay, I'm climbing down off my soap box...

Well said! You don't need to convince me, I hear all you say and second it! I didn't get a chance to question him on why the WLS patients are seeing him but I will. He wants to send me to SDSU Physioligy lab to have my body fat calculated by the "gold standard" = water submersion. I am all for it since it will probably prove how much I really have I am getting discouraged though-come to to find out there is nothing in my file at my PCP saying that there is any work being done on a referral. The people I talked to where like....what are you talking about, we see nothing here in your file about that. Then I was supposed to get a call today and I didn't get one I thought I finally had someone on my side but now I am questioning it? The letter I got from my ortho was nothing more than one sentence, it said nothing about my condition, the chance for back surgery or anything professional at all...it really sunk my hopes. Please send up a prayer, I KNOW I have made the right decision to pursue this and I know the obsticles infront of me will only make the sucess sweeter but it's hard when I only have barely started and so much is against me.

Thanks for all yor support
