Food...uck.
I am just over 2 weeks post op. I have followed my doctors instructions to eating. What I am finding is that certain smells really bother me. I can't stand the smell of gum, some foods cooking and beef gerky actually made me sick. I am trying to get in protein as much as I can, but most of it just turns my stomach. I can't gag down cottage cheese or any lunch meat. I tried several protein drinks prior to surgery and did fine, no more...can't stomach them. Will keep trying others that you have all suggested.
Did anyone else experience this with smells? I am really struggling getting in enough good foods. At this point I can do potoatoes, beans, cheese, soups, yougurt, fish and jello. I am trying to get in fluids too, but this has decreased with more intake of food. I am thinking of eggs and cheese, but scared as eggs were never my friend before surgery, so the longer I wait the better.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

Lisa,
What you're going through is normal. Try to focus on staying hydrated because being dehydrated can cause nausea. You will notice you're more sensitive to smells right now. Eggs made me sick for quite a while after surgery. Just take it easy for now. As you heal, you'll get more protein in.

I stopped trying to find a protein drink and just concentrated on getting my protein via food. I felt it was the best way to train me for the rest of my life.
I would make things like you mentioned and put unflavored unjury powder in them for extra protein if I didn't make my quota. Cheese is my best friend.
You may want to try ricotta with a bit of spaghetti sauce and melted string cheese and parmesean cheese.
Refried beans with melted cheddar and ff sour cream is yummy
Try all types of fish. Tilapia is great as well as salmon.
Smoked salmon rolled around some low fat cream cheese is a great breakfast.
Sashimi is perfect as well. Just small bites.
You will find a groove.

It will probably pass...
Cheese is my friend... I eat string cheese (low-fat mozzarella, basically) melted with a little teriyaki sauce or italian spices almost every day. I still struggle with smells at about four and a half months out from surgery, but it was worst at the two- to four-week stage that you're in. This too shall pass, my dear... give your pouch a little time to settle in.

Smells bother me as well. The smell of a friend's diet pepsi had me dry heaving. I was unable to do protein shakes as well. One thing I could eat which had little nutritional value was bagel crisps and cream cheese. It got me through a few weeks. My big thing now is tuna. I have started putting unflavored powder in carnation (I can taste it) and sucking that down in the morning. Otherwise I was not meeting my protein goal. I wasn't that worried about protein in the beginning, I worried more about water. I ate an egg and it was wonderful the first time, then made me nauseous after that and I haven't had one in awhile because of the thought of it making me sick.

With ya sista
Meats in general are just not good yet. Even if I can eat them, I hate the way they make me feel. The only really good protein I can stomach and eat is beans or bacon. I can't stand scrambled eggs anymore, tried them, now hate them. But, I do like and enjoy hardboiled eggs. It takes me a while to eat one, but I can totally handle it. I too am having trouble getting in all my protein. Have you tried jerky? I can eat that too, pretty well.
I did have a protein bar today, made by snickers, had 13 grams of protein. It was good; took me an hour to eat it, but it was still good.
Good luck with this as it is challenging.

Thanks for the support. Tonight I bit the bullet and tried a bacon, cheese and mushroom omellete. Didn't eat too much of it, in fact I felt the full feeling for the first time. Think it was just right, maybe one bite too much, but it stayed down and was very satisfying. The first batch I made without the yolk, but couldn't even look at it. So started again and made with one whole egg....and viola...a new meal for me...Yipeee.
Doris, no I didn't try jerky, but I had to hang my head out the window the other day while the hubby and daughter at it in the van...almost made me puke.

Lisa,
There is a website called bariatriceating.com Their stuff is great and there is a recipe section. In it there is a bacon, broccoli quiche recipe that is GREAT and I used spinach instead at your stage. I make it and freeze it in sections. Take a look and let me know what you think.
